It is a Mess!

Pros

It’s a struggle to find any good reasons. Like any business there are a few nice, kind and honest people.

Cons

Before posting my review, I have read all of the previous reviews and I encourage others to read more than just the first few that might come across your screen. Take notice of the large discrepancies between the good and poor reviews. Not many reviews in the middle and that alone should send a clear message to you as a job seeker to stay clear of this company. It is poorly managed from the CEO’s office to HR to middle management. There are so many excuses for lack of business generation and work given to employees and the board. There is no solid plan to grow. There is no quality leadership at any level to keep this company going well into the future. It’s a mess and my advise, for what it’s worth is not to waste your valuable time on this company.

Pros

Beautiful office, free coffee, casual Fridays

Cons

A lot of us are especially frustrated with McREL right now. We are left picking up the work of employees who have been laid off, working long hours and over the weekends, yet there is no job security or compensation in it for us. Each year we are asked to create "stretch goals" to stretch ourselves thinner for the benefit of the company, but there is no motivation because again, we are not compensated for the additional work that we're forced to create for ourselves. Personal development is basically a side note and not taken seriously. For our stretch goals, however, we are given grades and compared to one another. They keep saying the company has fallen on hard times and laying people off. Meanwhile, they have two boards with something like 40 members flying regularly to meetings in places like Honolulu, spending thousands each on airfare and resorts. The cost of these meetings could pay multiple annual salaries. Have they not heard of teleconferencing, and why on earth would you need that many members on these boards? In a financial lull, they will lay off employees but will continue to have these meetings. The company is hemorrhaging money, from real estate to pointless external surveys to relocating new hires (and then shortly letting them go), and somehow it's the employees' fault for not bringing in enough money. If you're one of the elite men or rare woman allowed in the top circle, you'll benefit from this. Otherwise, you're nothing.

Pros

Lots of good people who put in long hours and believe in the mission

Cons

This company has lost money the last 5 out of 6 years with the only profitable year coming from the acquisition of Edvantia and the cash they brought to the deal. Take away the Edvantia cash and it would be 6 years in a row. How bad are things? Last week they laid off the receptionist and this week the IT staff was let go. McREL expects employees to put in 60 hour weeks for 40 hour pay. There is no real business plan other than "Be Brave" and the senior leadership is very much a buddy buddy environment. Also, if you're looking for a company that embraces diversity, look elsewhere. As I said run away from this company
