Cons Far Outweigh the Pros

Pros

Some of the nicest and hardest working employees that you will come across. Weekly catered lunch and office manager does a great job planning events.

Cons

What started out as a great working environment has quickly deteriorated to a toxic environment that encompasses favoritism and politics. Upper management will lie straight to your face and promotions are not based on merit or accomplishments. Hard work and results are not recognized if you aren't favored. They will use you for migration grunt work and dump you afterwards.

Pros

Out of the five companies I have worked for, MediaAlpha has: * the strongest technical and non-technical teams I've worked with * the strongest, freshest product I've ever worked on * the fastest release cycles (there are none, we constantly release) * helped me grow the most, the quickest * helped me grow in ways those other companies never have * treated the entire team the most ethically

Cons

MediaAlpha is run on legacy code and architecture. That will not change. The strongest negative impact of the legacy architecture is that technical hiring has become difficult in the competitive Seattle area. Most software engineers are either not interested, not technically capable or not suited to the culture.

Pros

The only positive aspect of my experience at MediaAlpha was the comprehensive benefits package. The company offered a range of benefits that provided some level of support to employees.

Cons

I recently experienced a deeply troubling situation at MediaAlpha, leading me to share my story as a cautionary tale for others considering this company. The HR environment is nothing short of toxic, and my termination highlights the blatant disregard for employee well-being. After voicing concerns to both the leadership of HR and legal about my manager's unfair treatment, attempts to sabotage my work, toxic communication style, and hostile work environment, I provided solid evidence to support my claims. Shockingly, not only did they fail to address the issue, but I was let go under the vague reasoning of not getting along with my manager. This contradicts MediaAlpha's supposed core values of transparency and Radical Candid feedback, which turned out to be nothing more than an ironic joke. The HR department at MediaAlpha is a revolving door, with leadership appointing individuals from unrelated departments, lacking any HR experience. This is a significant red flag for prospective employees, signaling a disregard for addressing concerns and fostering a healthy work environment. During my years of HR experience, I never expected to witness such a toxic work culture, managed by individuals lacking relevant experience. It's disheartening that the people in charge were brought in from sales and business partnerships, undermining the hard work of dedicated employees. To emphasize the severity of the work environment, while on PTO recovering from surgery, my manager had the audacity to chastise me, showing a complete lack of regard for my well-being. Upon my return, I faced harassment and retaliation, with my manager placing me on a performance review despite having no knowledge of my role. I contested every inaccuracy, but the toxic atmosphere persisted. To make matters worse, I was terminated after being coerced into laying off five colleagues, as I was the only experienced individual in the department. This unjust termination followed my attempts to address mistreatment during my PTO and recovery from surgery, as well as reporting inappropriate behavior to legal and HR. In summary, my experience at MediaAlpha was nothing short of a nightmare, with a toxic work culture and HR department that actively suppresses concerns. I refused severance to warn others about the dismal work environment. Consider this a stark warning for anyone considering joining this company and its HR department.
