Pros

I was drawn to this place by their “indy shop” identity. They expressed a desire in the interview process for unique, inquisitive and energetic personalities. You do see that reflected in some of the people work there. I met some real gems in my time at Mekanism. It’s not corporate in the sense that everyone wears ties, but it’s definitely corporate in the way they treat people.

Cons

I could never put my finger on exactly why this place was so detrimental to my everyday happiness. If you listen in on an all-hands meeting, you’ll hear nothing but energy and joy. Listen in on the 1-1s, and it’s a different story. It’s a manger explaining that they realize you’re already double scoped, but “we just need to be more efficient.” It’s two employees trying to work out if they need express permission to work from home the day after the loss of a pet. Or a huddle with a sobbing coworker who is so stressed out their spouse wants them to just quit. The managing director in my region was, hands down, the cruelest person I’ve ever worked with. We were told that work-life balance was not to be expected in this industry. Working long hours and on weekends is the norm. There was a near-constant feedback loop of negative comments and antagonistic behavior from leadership. Employee satisfaction surveys are NOT anonymous. Management is retaliatory and vindictive. Layoffs have been heavy and frequent. Those that could leave already have.

Avoid at All Costs

Pros

- A few strategy rockstars - Some cool clients - Decent pay

Cons

- Mek rewards people that talk (yell) the loudest and find problems. No one approaches challenges with a solution-minded mindset or is willing to compromise on alternative solutions; instead they point fingers/ play the blame game. - Creative suffers because the loudest in the room make decisions, often based on ego vs. strategically. Creative leads often are so combative other teams have no opportunity to provide constructive feedback. - HR is not objective + worsens issues vs. helping the general team. They know of leadership issues and yet do nothing to fix/address bullying behavior from C-suite and top levels. - There is no room for growth or improvement - if you do something that is interpreted as a mistake, your job may be on the line. - Leadership consistently promotes themselves, while saying there is no budget for lower level staff to move up. - Similar environment to high school with popular kids + bad talking behind backs. If you don't get into the "in crowd", lose all hope of getting opportunities, promotions, or even positive feedback. Truly have never witnessed a more toxic work environment - your mental health will be destroyed here. If you're a collaborative team member that thrives on genuine connections and collaboration - run!

Pros

The extra star in this review is for the day-to-day team. I worked with some fantastic people, who truly cared about doing a good job and seeing their peers succeed. Creative is top-notch and the department has managed to mostly distance itself from the problems of other groups. Clients see this in the work and that is what is currently driving new business.

Cons

The hostile work environment I endured at Mekanism is what keeps therapists in business. My boss was a textbook narcissist, described as such by coworkers, clients, and former direct reports who were in this role before me. I was warned and took the job anyway. With some distance, I can clearly see how truly damaging this manipulative and gaslighting behavior was. Rates of attrition are extremely high, even for an agency during recently-challenging times of employment. Raises and promotions are scarce due to pressures from a recent acquisition. Employee satisfaction is low due to long hours (inadequate staffing) and a sense of competition within teams (perpetuated and encouraged by leadership). It’s not a great place to work right now, but new management may improve that. Overall company issues include a grossly-high turnover rates (+40% attrition/quitting), a recent merger/acquisition, low employee satisfaction and poor work/life balance.
