After my experience with the company Mentorphone, I would like to give a review based on my experience with this company.
Qualifications: I believe you need to be a native speaker of the English
• I do not think a four year degree is necessary
• they like you to have some experience in the field
Client base:
•Adults and children in South Korea
Platform:
• Skype or a soft phone app
Lessons
• Provided for you in online textbook form or an uploaded daily news is that they provide.
The lessons are pretty poor quality for the most part and you have to really substitute with your own stuff. A lot of it is going to be open conversation and excruciating small talk.
Pay:
• $14 an hour no bonus structure
Schedule:
• fixed Monday to Friday South Korean time which usually means Sunday to Thursday in the western time zones.
Company relations
•The management/trainer is informative in the beginning, but turns out to be kind of unsupportive and not very understanding. Their expectations are a little bit ridiculous:
• sessions can last anywhere from 10 to 60 minutes, after which you are required to write a very lengthy report including at least 5 to 6 sentence corrections with the sentence that they had wrong and the corrected version, as well as 5 to 6 suggestions for better phrases and sentence structure, as well as vocabulary and idioms and such, oh don’t let me forget the very long letter that you have to write them each time. Sometimes, you have to actually listen to the entire session again to make sure you get enough corrections written down, because the company will complain If your reports aren’t long enough. the reports take a while to write, even after you get the hang of it. The time spent listening to the session on recording and writing reports is unpaid! To make matters worse, sometimes that client will upload a writing correction for you to do on your own time unpaid, like editing a college paper for free.
My first paycheck was not given to me because they said I didn’t have enough sessions, but that’s not true I did. They waited until the last minute during the second month to verify my banking information, saying that they’ve never heard of my bank and they didn’t know if I could receive a wire transfer. I told him that of course my bank received a wire transfers but then they went ahead and sent the wire transfer in Canadian dollars and my bank is American. That was not accepted by my bank And the whole thing was handled very unprofessionally with them blaming me for the wire transfer not going through. I did eventually receive my pay for those two months together. I then gave my notice, and they talked me into extending my last day until the 20th for the cut off of pay. The 26 has come and gone and I worked until the 20th as they asked. I have emailed the company at least four times regarding my pay for the month of April, and all of the emails have been ignored. I’ve also tried messaging the company on Skype to find out what will happen with my last paycheck and when I will be getting it, and they are ignoring me. My advice is to never work for this company. They are a soul crushing company and I at this point I have no idea whether or not I will get paid. I posted the issue about pay in my own ESL group and somehow they found out because another Tutor mentioned it and quit. They told me I must remove my post right away, which I had to do because I was worried about them suing me or something for defamation. The thing is, it’s not defamation if it’s true. This company will absolutely make you miserable; it’s a nightmare. I really don’t know who I’m going to have to contact to get my last paycheck, but I’ve looked into the South Korean wage authority and I really can’t find anybody to contact there.
