Pros

Okay building & location despite inexpensive and impractical interior decor. Expenses are paid on time.

Cons

Perks and culture are paltry in comparison to the rest of the industry - we're talking several orders of magnitude. Yet they continue to boast 2000-era salaries & rewards as if they are current. Willful loss or dismissal of several promising and now very succesful people in 2013, followed by the departure of their CTO in 2014 demonstrates a lack of vision and commitment to staff. Good employers tend to attract and retain talent, not accumulate and then shed it suddenly. Perfectly well intentioned staff are treated as fair game when management has need of a scapegoat. In the past, they've also tried to rationalize away negative staff reviews via one on one meetings. A high-pressure and suspicious alternative to simply owning their problems. As a developer who has experienced it, every stage of any process is a struggle for Metric Marketing. Staff are expected to take on the stresses of ownership without reaping even a fraction of the benefits. Fixation on billable hours creates an atmosphere of perpetual panic and negativity that results in only one mode: crisis. All of this plays back into the absence of career prospects at Metric Marketing. Staff spend most of their time putting out small fires as opposed to learning smarter ways to do work and as a result, don't grow. Contempt towards current and former staff comes up from time to time and is another tactic used to sidestep meeting internal challenges head on. Cheesy dog-whistle terms like "positivity" and "passion" are cheapened through divisive overuse, despite being nowhere to be found at Metric Marketing.

Research, creativity, and planning are abhorred.

Pros

Casual dress, pizza lunch fridays

Cons

Image always overrides considerations for practical implementation. Research and creativity is not encouraged. Unreasonable deadlines and pushes for revenue generating hours take so much precedence over planning that implementations are hurried and problem filled. Management is rarely available to make decisions and gets angered when forced to make decisions. Employees that have the expertise to make decisions on management's behalf are not trusted and allowed to. Problems that come from poor planning from management get looked at as poor performance from employees rather than management issues. The number 1 priority is how something looks, with no consideration to how it works or how it would be implemented, and it's up to the implementers to make magic with little tools or planning. They will resist spending money on good solutions, and prefer the quick hack and wonder why people have to keep coming back to those solutions to fix them again and again. Decisions come down from on high and surprise people. They want to be a high tech company without being technical. They want to be an agency without allowing creativity to flourish. They have a tendancy to hire junior for low salary, making the employee think they will pay more as they gain experience, but not really keep up with the rest of the market for salary. No training available and no career advancement outside of whatever grunt work they need done at the time. Career stagnation or dillution is a very real possibility here. Going above and beyond the call of duty is expected, but with no increase in compensation.

No drive, no creativity, no reason to work there

Pros

Modern office space in Downtown Winnipeg Pizza and beer on Fridays Non-management employees ultimately want to do good work and contribute to a fun atmosphere

Cons

Aggressive, unrealistic deadlines: These lead to panic in the office and poor quality work, despite the team's best attempts. Frustrated, desperate employees: Employees have few opportunities to produce meaningful work, leading to a feeling of unfulfilled potential. No creativity and no respect for creative professions: For a company that describes itself as an "agency", management sure has a hate-on for the world of graphic design. Upper management seems to constantly mock other, very serious and successful agencies for putting stock into great design. No one at the company bothers to interact with or become a member of local creative institutions or communities. Does not believe that good design is important. Management abruptly changes employees' job functions to suit their needs regardless of whether or not it was the job the employee earned an education in or was hired for. Employees are often thrown into doing SEO work with no understanding of what to do or how to do it. Meanwhile, management will outsource for things like graphic design and copywriting, a very pricey thing to do. Creative types are the ones who get thrust into doing SEO work typically because they're younger and management makes them feel as though they should be grateful to accept any work coming to them. Management also routinely forces employees to work reception at the drop of a hat. They also expect them to fully complete their original job function and SEO tasks at this time. Then they balk at the notion that this is unacceptable and unfair. If you leave the company after this kind of treatment, they will go behind your back and tell lies about you to other employees to make it seem like they didn't do anything wrong and like you were a bad person. This has happened to almost every person who has left the company to date. No HR presence - sexist, racist, and extremely offensive commentary is rampant in the office. If employees ask to meet with management to politely discuss how cruel and unfair this kind of commentary is, they're told to "suck it up" and "learn to take a joke". Have overheard staff discussing female clients in a sexually explicit nature immediately after she left the building following a meeting. Management places undervalued employees (ones they don't like or care about) in a dark corner at the back of the office with six foot tall desk shields to discourage talking among employees. You're not a person at Metric Marketing, you're a means to an end. Suggestions, questions, and complaints are met with anger followed by termination. Management does not want anyone rocking the boat. The moment an employee speaks up about something, plans are set in place to let them go or treat them so poorly that the employee is all but forced to leave. I would never let anyone I know work at this company. To work there is to be underpaid, overworked, have your skills, problem-solving abilities, and creativity be hugely undervalued.
