Miami Herald's parent company needs to invest in its employees
Pros
The Miami Herald is a legacy news organization with a resilient and talented staff. The staff is filled with wonderful people. Unlike previous generations at the Herald, collaboration is easy and elevates everyone's effort. Toxic rivalries do not exist. New reporters work easily with veterans and their passion for producing solid, local journalism is infectious. This company punches above its weight class. The newsroom's union-backed guild is negotiating a first contract.
Cons
McClatchy, the Herald's parent companym has withheld investing in its most important asset, its employees, and its brand, reputation and potential is slipping. Salaries have not kept pace with competitors, or the cost of living. The challenges of working in a pandemic are costs expected to be shouldered by employees. No surprise, the company is failing to attract high level talent in the last year. There are now more than a dozen openings. Hopefully the owners will see the collapse of confidence and disinvestment as a threat to its future profits and decide it's time to turn things around.
