Too Little - And Yes, Too Late

Pros

1. Located in beautiful Vermont. 2. Great salary. 3. Comparable benefits to other companies. 4. Work advancement as long as you are one of the chosen few. 5. Some remote work allowed. 6. Great products but are now compromised. 7. Did I mention, there is always beer in the fridge?

Cons

1. For those of us who were left, it is hard to watch others bullied and pushed out the door. 2. The promotion has usually been indicative that your days are numbered. 3. There is a constant blame game on those who were forced to leave or who left on their own. 4. Once people have left, the rest of the team had to pick up the slack = too much work, not enough compensation. 5. Great products but no real production support left anymore. 6. Remote work is now encouraged for lack of finding enough local talent. Should have left the original team in tact.

Treating Valuable Employees Poorly

Pros

The actual products of the company have some wonderful innovations in language learning that far exceeds what people like Rosetta Stone are doing.

Cons

They did awful things to a lot of people who did amazing work for them. I saw an entire team work overtime for months putting together amazing products with a great attitude, only to have them all laid off for their trouble. The management is very much out of touch and appeared to only be trying to save face and increase their bottom line by throwing those under the bus who had done excellent work.

The clueless management team will likely destroy this company.

Pros

I worked creating courses for Middlebury for several years and actually loved the work we were doing. It was both challenging and interesting, and I had every confidence that between the course pedagogy and the state-of-the-art tech, this company would soon become the world leader in online language acquisition. The Provo team wasn't perfect, and not always terribly efficient, but they also demonstrated absolute brilliance and uncommon dedication when called upon.

Cons

Unfortunately, the Vermont executive team was almost universally incompetent. The CEO consistently appeared more concerned with being able to announce to the world that she was in charge of a tech company than actually developing worthwhile products. In fact, the language courses were demonstrably the lowest priority in management's eyes, as they assumed they could eliminate the entire content development team and consolidate the business around their clique in Vermont. I have no doubt that if the company is to survive at all, it will be because Middlebury College and K12 finally identify the source of the problems, fire the executives, and bring in people who are focused on creating a quality product.
