Abysmally bad management. My manager never hesitates to tell me what I'm doing wrong. I never hear that I've done something right. I've been in my field as a successful employee for 20 years at two other universities where I had a consistent upper mobility. I find it hard to believe I've contributed nothing at Midway, but according to my manager, I apparently have not. Whenever I present an idea, my manager tells me the Dean or President wouldn't like it. When I ask to try to pitch the idea to them, she says I shouldn't speak to the Dean or President. The truth is: my manager can't take responsibility for saying no herself and she's going to say no to anyone else's ideas because she is the only one allowed to 'manage the vision' of the department. This despite the fact that this is her first management position and first position in higher ed. The horrific work environment for employees is made possible by the fact that there is no communication between upper management (Deans) and employees. The Deans are completely convinced certain middle managers are golden. If they actually heard the interactions between those managers and their employees, they'd be horrified (I hope).

The top leadership at Midway is petty and closed off from everyone else. Nothing is ever their fault and they blame downward. Anyone who messes up gets no second chance--just the ax. Also the business of growing enrollment thru athletics seems shaky.
