Pros
Health insurance after retirement, but nobody makes it that long anymore
Cons
Terrible administration, supervison is hit and miss. Critically low staffing, dangerous, community and politics hate you, consent decree makes it impossible to do real police work, constantly catering to suspects in custody. Low pay, bad benefits, been out of contract for years and the city offers nothing. I left the area to another agency and it saved my life. Divorce and suicide is rampant in the agency. I now have more time off, make more, and have better retirement plan and benefits. Big cities use to be a great place to learn to be an officer, but now they have officers who don't even know how to make a traffic stop because they're worried about the consent decree/Collins Agreement. The cities resources are so out of date. People are so burnt out they'll let you get hurt before backing you up. With the shortage in policing, I would encourage ANYONE to avoid big cities like Milwaukee like the plague. Go to a mid size agency 30,000-60,000. You'll make more and do more police work and be happier.
