Pros

The kids are great. The subject matter is meaningful

Cons

MLP has a very rigid structure for how to teach mindfulness. And they micromanage this a lot. It is hard to feel valued at the company for the individual strengths and gifts that you bring unless you have a supervisor who is very gifted at this. But don’t count on it because this year almost all our amazing supervisors left due to working conditions in the main office that were not conducive to a mindful environment. The org presents itself as having a lot of integrity during training but then this is not carried out in reality. They talk about being trauma informed but then do not respect this with staff, often showing up on campus for observations unannounced. The CEO’s main prerogative is to grow the company, and does not prioritize creating a harmonious environment for the staff who often do not feel genuine trust, support and recognition for the extremely hard work we do.

Pros

Sharing mindfulness with kids and communities - the kids are great. The org attracts amazing admin-level staff who try to look out for and advocate for direct service staff.

Cons

Terrible work culture thanks to the CEO! Super toxic work environment. He would call at all hours of the day and night, expect people to work 14+ hours a day, never approve days off without a fight/hassle, and send awful emails talking trash about every employee. Often the HR director was the only thing keeping him from doing things that were definitely illegal (he would try to find ways to get people fired if he didn’t like them, try to get people to work outside of normal work hours, among other things). The board are all kept from the real truth of how things are, so things will never change. In the last 12 months the entire administrative side of the program department quit as well as the HR, partnership, and development depts. it is simply not a healthy place for people to work due to the approach/culture/management established by CEO.

Leadership is NOT Mindful

Pros

Sharing mindfulness with children on a daily basis. Seeing the impact of mindfulness in the children's lives.

Cons

Executive Director is not mindful. The turnover rate is extremely high due to poor management. You do not feel valued and appreciated by the ED. You feel like a puppet and are held to impossibly high standards. Everything you do is micromanaged and there is no sense of autonomy in the position. Luckily, as a coach, you do not deal with admin everyday as you are at your school site. If you are lucky enough to have a wonderful school it makes all the difference in the world. If you are looking for professional growth, this is not the organization to be in. Until they get rid of their executive director and find a real mindful leader, this organization is going to fall apart.
