Not The Best Place To Work

Pros

Salary Benefits athough you pay

Cons

The board of trustees treat the faculty poorly. They use aggressive attorneys to negotiate in bad faith with the faculty union. The board seems to regard the faculty as unnecessary. The district is rich; but not well managed. Sick leave investigations have found constant under reporting of faculty sick leave. They now owe thousands of dollars because of long standing under reporting and favorable to the district miscalculations that came to light after a retired faculty checked their calculations to find wide spread under reporting which resulted in substantial under payment when faculty retired. Personnel under reported accumulated sick leave to their benefit, short changing retiring faculty for several years. Close to criminal? Tenured faculty have been let go through an unusual “performance goals” system that lets them push out unpopular to the administration faculty. Look elsewhere and you may do better.

Pros

Students are kind, hard working, and serious. Most students appreciate what you do as an instructor. Fellow colleagues are helpful and smart. The academic environment is professional.

Cons

Administration is not collaborative. The management style is heavy-handed and rules are handed down arbitrarily. There is no real shared governance. I don't feel respected for all the work I do (and have done) to support students at this college. Administrators want faculty to go to great lengths to help and support students but then the administration won't support faculty. The morale is quite low and every task is much harder than it needs to be; thus taking faculty away from helping students. There used to be real joy in teaching at Mission, but with the new Chancellor, Brad Davis, that joy is gone. We had a special something but now our former sweet culture has become like another stale corporation.

Pros

The students and faculty are great

Cons

Administrative leaders set the tone at colleges and unfortunately the current tone is one of distrust and micro management.
