Beware of this firm – they are awful

Pros

The firm hires recent graduates from top undergraduate and graduate schools – all highly intelligent individuals committed to social justice. Most junior staff are very nice and passionate about social justice causes.

Cons

Where to begin? 1) Terrible compensation. You are grossly underpaid at Mission Measurement (comparable to industry standards). Remember, this is a for-profit firm, not a non-profit, although they “advice” non-profits. 2) Long hours. Meanwhile you are grossly overworked and expected to “deal” with it. 3) Awful CEO. Yes he has fancy degrees, an impressive rolodex, and a pretty office. Be he created a toxic work environment where many staff members quit or were forced out; where subordinates walk on pins and needles to please him; and he consistently badmouths employees behind their back. I experienced this, as did many colleagues. 4) Poor employee retention and absence of professional development. Commitments to employees are made and rarely upheld. Leadership promises promotions, pay increases, better work/ life balance, yet rarely delivers. This happened repeatedly during my time at the firm. 5) While the firm has many good ideas, there are few resources internally to effectively execute and produce quality products. For a firm that brands itself as the “leader in social sector data and insight”, it poorly invests in internal R&D.

The firm did have a reorg during this time and as a result some people left. We are always working to empower our employees and invest in their growth.

Lots of promise, not quite there

Pros

The company is full of young, enthusiastic and very bright employees. Projects are managed in small teams, and there is plenty of opportunity to contribute to the development and direction of an engagement. An innovative idea, tool, or solution has a good chance of making a big impact on a client's operations if it is well developed. The new principles also seem to be making a lot of progress with internal management. The firm is positioned to make very real contributions to clients, and the fields of social impact strategy and performance assessment - as well as very real gains in the market.

Cons

The company sabotaged itself in the past year, repeatedly. Management would too often ignore intelligent input from lower employees, or go over their heads in managing a client engagement, often with a cost to client relationships and internal morale. The firm also saw enormous staff turnover at all levels, but the new teams seem be more stable. It is difficult to anticipate who has the authority to make or approve decisions. MM has struggled with all of the hurdles of transitioning to a mid-size firm.
