One issue is that Mocana incorrectly believes that proprietary software is more secure. Senior management often discourages the use of open source software because vulnerabilities take longer to be fixed. However, the opposite is actually true. Studies have shown that bugs in open source software are patched a lot quicker.
Every company has politics, and Mocana is no exception. People do like to gossip, and competition sometimes gets in the way of cooperation. It can be difficult to get information from some team members because they are afraid you will take their jobs. I've also seen people blame others for their own mistakes.
Another downside is that Mocana often relocates. We moved to a different office in Sunnyvale just seven months after a previous move from San Francisco. Although it has always been a convenient location as mentioned above, the overhead is not negligible.
However, there were more serious problems. I was about seven months in when I noticed a high turnover. People had started to leave the company all of a sudden. I counted at least 12 employee departures in 10 months — which is a lot for a small startup. Even those had been with Mocana for years disappeared. I also heard rumors that we had lost a major customer. Despite these issues, the executive team assured us there would be no layoffs.
I was about to consider exploring other opportunities when I was laid off out of the blue. From what my boss told me, the company had decided to discontinue the project I was working on. It completely blindsided me because I didn't expect things to go downhill so quickly. I was let go on a moment's notice with no transition period. I understand this is legal in an at-will state, but a head start on my job search would have been nice. To make matters worse, Mocana does not do much to support laid-off employees. You get a small severance package and no outplacement services. All my manager could do was direct me to a standard job search website and offer a reference.
Although my experience at Mocana was overall positive, this is not a company I can recommend in good conscience.
Cons in a nutshell:
- Company believes in "security through obscurity"
- Politics
- Frequent office moves
- High turnover
- Layoffs are not handled gracefully
