Pros

You love working with the general aviation community incl. military, business travelers, and student pilots. Serving the customers is the best part of the job!

Cons

Widespread lack of mutual respect between workers and management, no morale, horrible communication, false promises and lies from supervisors, high tolerance for discriminatory, offensive “locker room talk”, frequent beratement from superiors, micromanagement, lack of genuine concern for safety in a highly dangerous environment, and very high turnover rate.

Pros

After buying our FBO from a smaller company, Modern invested in our facilities: they upgraded our computers, our wifi, our business software (to X-1, which I really like).

Cons

They didn't invest in our people. Line service techs at other Modern locations earn twice as much as we do. HR told us it wouldn't be "fair" to pay us the same as employees at bigger locations because they make more money. Nevermind that it's the same job, we each do more work because there are fewer of us, and we have very little say in how many planes land or how much fuel they take. HR misled us about retaining our vacation and sick days. Ultimately I chose to leave due to the change in management style in the direction of micromanagement. I have loved my job. Loved coming to work. I'm proud of my accomplishments over the past 5 years; the busy days of jet traffic and the extreme weather and the unusual situations and the emergencies I've handled and the people I've made happy...I'm honestly broken hearted to leave this job. Broken hearted that Modern Aviation doesn't give two rat tails about the blood sweat and tears I've given this job. They only care if I'm more than seven minutes late or early, and other things that don't matter in the grand scheme of things. I worked so hard. And Modern has made me feel like none of it mattered. Like I haven't earned enough trust and respect to take two days off for a stomach flu, or haven't earned forgiveness for making wrong decisions when I had Covid and fever. I'm so incredibly disappointed and sad, my confidence destroyed.

Not a place to work long-term

Pros

Modern hires some very talented individuals. Unfortunately, those people do not stay for long. During my time at Modern, I was denied formal training on numerous occasions. But I did learn a great deal about what not to do as a manager and a leader, after watching my direct supervisor and corporate leadership continuously make terrible decisions and treat their employees poorly.

Cons

Modern Aviation's leadership creates a very toxic environment for it's lower level supervisors and managers. Modern has demonstrated that they truly prioritize income over their customers, employees and even safety. Their lack of proper resource planning results in many employees falling behind on work. I know of numerous employees, including myself who worked 10-12 hour shifts, sometimes 7 days a week, just to try to keep up. When I brought this up to my manager, his answer was "I guess you need to start working more hours". Myself and other managers have pleaded for additional tooling, training and resources to be able to do our jobs successfully. The number of times that we gotten what we needed is heavily outweighed by the times we did not. When we failed due to not having the proper tooling, training or resources, I was reprimanded for it. Modern often boasts about their safety culture. Impressively, many locations are IS-BAH Stage 2. Yet in my experience, a large majority of the time that a safety issue was identified, it was simply acknowledged and not resolved. One more than one occasion, an employee injury eventually resulted, and still nothing was done. I also witnessed several ethical violations, though I cannot expand on those without revealing my identity. One of them however, greatly jeopardized my career. I brought this specific occurance up to corporate leadership, who dismissed any wrongdoing. The bottom line is that if you want to work at Modern, have a plan. Modern is not a place that you can work to receive formal training to further advance yourself in your career.
