Pros

People are approachable and easy to get along with. Never had a problem getting paid.

Cons

Wow. I left Modus a long time ago and hadn't thought about the company at all until I got an email from Glassdooor telling me about new reviews. When I left there were NONE. Now there are over 15. I'm honestly surprised. If you're interviewing here I suggest you read every review (good AND bad) and come to your own conclusion. What I WILL say is that there seems to be over-embellishment by nearly everyone involved in posting these reviews. Modus is not run by evil people who are hellbent on destroying your life. Modus is also not the BEST COMPANY EVARRRRR! The truth is somewhere in the middle. I'll point out some things I noticed and give you, the potential employee, a roadmap on how to handle your interaction with Modus. * Why were no reviews posted before late 2014? If the company was so bad (or so good) why didn't a single person post a review? * Take a look at the timeline of reviews. The initial reviews were pretty scathing. The subsequent reviews make Modus look like heaven on earth. Does that seem curious to you? * Look for specifics and avoid broad generalizations in the reviews. There are people who gave positive and negative reviews that have very specific criticisms and kudos. Ask your interviewer about what you've read here. Unless you're desperate you should be interviewing Modus at the same time they're interviewing you. Here is where I inject some of my personal opinion... I'm inclined to believe the negative reviews more than the positive reviews because the positive reviews are SO over the top that they're completely ridiculous. Management at Modus is a group of individuals that have known each other for years, and I think that creates a very cliquey type of environment in which you need to kiss butt or somehow finagle your way into their social circle if you want them to treat you with respect. It's run less like a business and more like a group of friends who happened upon a good business idea. If you don't "fit in" they'll run you out of there in an instant. Something that really concerns me is the allegation that management was somehow behind posting fake reviews, or "suggesting" that current employees post glowing reviews. I REALLY want to believe this is not true, because if it is then it's REALLY shady and unethical behavior. Consider what I wrote earlier about management being a clique. Then imagine yourself as a run-of-the-mill employee who needs the job to pay their bills. Management comes to you and "suggests" you write a positive review. They might as well be threatening to fire you if you don't comply. What I also find concerning is that Modus has some VERY high profile clientele. They do business with companies that are well-known names in their business sphere. If you're a high profile, multi billion dollar international business would you want to be associated with a company that puts pressure on their employees to astroturf review websites under the potential penalty of being fired?

I can only assume that you worked with Modus in a time from late 2014 to early 2015. We really only started employing software developers, directly, within that timeframe. Prior to that, 100% of our work was outsourced to other companies. I genuinely have to apologize for your experience as we started to make that transition from outsource to "in-source" development work. We were significantly under-staffed. As a result, there was a domino effect of negativity. Projects lacked organization. Developers were over-worked and under-appreciated. Stress level was high. It was bad. I recognized this at the time and took some pretty significant steps to get us out of that hole. We have more than 3X the staff in development than we did when (I assume) you worked here. I have bolstered the internal team with additional outsourced teams. Yet, my long term goal is to have everyone in house. We have professional project managers. We have seasoned system architects. I reallocated a huge amount of our resources to rebuilding the processes and procedure. I genuinely believe that if any current developer was asked, the outlook would be far different. I never asked anyone to write positive reviews. Modus is a pretty flat company. I'm the CEO, and started the company with my business partner from scratch. There are about 3 other people in management. There was no directive from me, and I really doubt any of the managers pushed employees to write positive reviews.. I agree, some of the reviews are "over the top". My assumption is that certain happy employees, tried to offset negative reviews by writing overly positive reviews. Modus is not perfect. It is a work in progress. I have made huge efforts in creating a nicer work environment. I built benefits and education programs that I think rival companies 100X larger than us. We have implemented monthly all hands calls. I personally meet one-on-one with employees, almost every week, to try and get direct feedback. It has come a long way in a short period of time. There will always be room for improvement. Once again, I apologize for your negative experience. I hope that you have managed to find a path in your career that is fulfilling and brings you happiness. Brandon Johnson

Pros

Good position in the market, and has the potential to become a player in insurance. Good client list. Casual dress code.

Cons

Tiny company trying to push enterprise software with little support and personnel. Company culture is defined the deadlines, extra hours is a requirement.

This falls pretty much within the same timing as the other reviews with the same outlook. Modus went through a period of time (first half of 2015) where our sales opportunities significantly outpaced our scale. As a result of that, development teams were overworked, stress was high, and most of the people working in that group felt under appreciated. It was a genuine problem. Yet, it is a problem that was addressed and we have taken big steps to repair the situation. A lot of that extra workload has been picked up by contractors as we hire direct staff. Ultimately, we want to find direct staff to do all of our development work. However, it takes time to build a team. We are hiring multiple people each month, and that trend will continue through the rest of the year. I am sorry you had such a mediocre experience with Modus. I like to think that we learned a lot from that time. I feel that most of the current people on the development team are pretty happy with their jobs now. Thanks. Brandon Johnson

Pros

Checks always cleared. Benefits were good. Office was cleaned regularly. Heated in the winter and air conditioned in the summer. Nice neighborhood. Grocery store across the street.

Cons

In my estimation this company fails to find (and retain) good devs for a few reasons. 1) Huntington Beach is about 50 miles from SoCal's tech hotbed, Santa Monica. Translation: All the good devs aren't anywhere near. 2) Lackluster product. While I admire the executive team's ability to create and run this business I think they would even admit that Insurance Telematics is not very exciting. If you're a GOOD software dev and you can move freely then it's totally a seller's market. With a ton of startups in Santa Monica / West LA working on fun, exciting and COOL projects where you can network with other devs, why would I work 50 miles away on a very unexciting project? 3) Company culture. And by company culture I mean the lack thereof. If you like working in a quiet residential neighborhood in a nondescript office park then maybe this is the place for you. If you like incomplete and ever-changing project specs, maybe this is the place for you. If you like being kept in the dark about the long-term implications of the project you're working, maybe this is the place for you. If you like cowboy coding without proper testing, maybe this is the place for you. If you like hearing management scream at the offshore dev team for their incompetence and then make YOU clean up their mess, maybe this is the place for you. Simply put, in the current market for developers the company culture is more inline with an "Office Space", worker drone type of existence. The projects you work are neither interesting, fun, exciting, fulfilling, able to be bragged about or worthy of putting on your resume. You will wake up every morning dreading to go to work and counting down until 5 when you can go home.

I agree with some of the points made in this review. I assume this employee was part of the company during a transitional period, before we had our new office space, and started scaling up our development teams. We are not in a tech hot bed. We are in a beach town. Some people might like this, others may not. I personally like the more laid back environment. I also like the fact that most of the employees live close by and do not have to commute. Many ride their bikes to work. To each their own. I can see how some people might not think insurance telematics is exciting. Yet, it is an excellent way to generate revenue and build a large user base. It is also only one of the types of solutions we deploy. We also have significant growth in our commercial fleet, and teen driving solutions. What is exciting, to me, is creating solutions that might ultimately improve how someone drives. If something we develop, somehow contributes to creating safer drivers, that is a great thing. To me, it is more fulfilling than creating a consumer product that has no potential for any type of positive effect on the world. The company culture was lacking previously. It is a negative side effect of growing pains and being under-staffed. I like to think that we are quickly emerging from that. Culture is not something that is designed and built by a company. Management can do their best to try to steer a culture, and support aspects of it. However, it is the employees that create the culture. As we continue to grow and add more great people, I think our culture is really starting to blossom. Thank you for the review. I genuinely do care about the opinion of my employees and am constantly striving to improve. Brandon Johnson CEO
