Pros

Central CBD location, friendly staff, decent technology, a healthy amount of professional development, extra pay for student consultations and regular meetings.

Cons

Management are ruthless, making swift decisions affecting staff and students with often little or no consultation. Promotions are made overnight without interviews or advertising, while over 70% of the teaching pool are casual. The Upper Management are mostly comprised of fossils that have earned seniority, yet have not got the management training necessary to do their jobs properly. The culture of the student cohort is strained because most classes are dominated by Chinese students. The gender and nationality mix is unbalanced and the opportunity to mix with other students from other cultures is all too often missed entirely. The academic and assessment schedule is crammed with marking and odious admin every day. Some courses have 30 assessment tasks in 10 weeks and run for 50 weeks a years.

Management expects a great deal of unpaid overtime

Pros

Competitive salary and packaging perks. Nice office in central CBD. Healthy EBA with pay rises. Free coffee.

Cons

Jo Mithen, CEO, is a ruthless business woman and lawyer. Under her leadership, the college has grown ridiculously large, focussing on Chinese students studying Business. It used to be a pathway to help students achieve entry in a more supportive environment. Now it is a money making factory and foreign student processing centre for Monash Uni. Students who can barely speak english or string two written sentences together are being passed with no questions asked. Fake medical certificates easily get students through the special consideration system. Completely devaluing degrees in Australia with this rubbish. Non teaching staff who are not unionised are expected to work ridiculous amounts of unpaid overtime, at all times suck up to their boss, management and the CEO, and never raise any issues. Otherwise find yourself on the end of performance management and forced exit.

Pros

The salary is well above average for the industry. They are very good about paying penalty rates for weekend work and paying for attending meetings etc at a non-teaching rate. It's a very professional environment.

Cons

The workload is high! Student expectations are high (rightly considering their fees) and there is a lack of cultural diversity in the student cohort. There are very few opportunities to get a permanent position, almost everyone (except those there for 10+ years) is casual. This means you aren't paid for non-teaching weeks, holidays, etc. Hours can fluctuate - take the money and save it while you can. To get a position higher than normal teacher is very competitive, will require a Master's and knowing the right people.
