Pros

Mother Jones is a team of people who care a lot about what they do. They’re a quirky bunch so it’s never too dull a moment. There is a Union for employees.

Cons

The editorial/business divide is huge. If you’re on the business team you’re often treated as a second class citizen. Add to this it’s an organization helmed by women who tend to promote men over women and silo women into administrative roles. The workplace is nowhere near as diverse as it should be and the management is reticent to open up about this and truly invest in making an intersectionally inclusive workplace.

Pros

Smart, passionate colleagues, great benefits, good pay (especially in the nonprofit and/or media space), and real opportunities for growth if you work smart and work hard. Plus you're working for an organization doing good in the world.

Cons

Lack of resources on the business/tech side of things is understandable since editorial is the focus of the organization but it does mean staff are overtaxed, less can be accomplished, and work suffers due to burnout related turnover and lack of institutional knowledge.

Pros

Excellent office culture. Engaging work and supportive coworkers. Everyone wants everyone to succeed, and understanding.

Cons

There’s some disorganization in the news room that can sometimes leave people underutilized.
