Pros

You can feel good about the services you're providing the community in theory.

Cons

mgmt doesn't care about your career path, experience, interests or degrees at all. being on-call is near impossible to break out of. mgmt is not transparent or helpful in the least. you are expected to perform duties far out of your pay grade. honestly have never felt valued or cared about - feel like more of a replaceable number than an individual human.

Pros

Great benefits, but you can get great benefits working for any other government organization.

Cons

After 12 years and many management transitions it is obvious that it is not about what you know, but who you know in the organization. The union is in bed with management, and if your an older employee they will give you more reason to leave than to stay. There is no career path even if you get a degree in most cases. A job here is only for the elite and that is made apparent everyday especially if you are a lower class employee.

Pros

Union representation means you basically can't get fired. Can be easy to put focus on things outside of work, as long as emotional labor and frequent traumatic experiences don't completely drain you.

Cons

Admin and management completely suck. Union does absolutely nothing for you. No security at most library branches. No support for employees working in dangerous neighborhoods. Low pay. Terrible benefits. Very few opportunities for growth. Those who care are paid the same as those who don't. Union representation means you basically can't get fired.
