Pros

Company is going through the typical struggles of a startup realising it's now a scaleup and has to operate differently. It is making that transition gradually. There are some very clever technical people working here and there's scope for learning particularly for a junior or mid-level developer.

Cons

Work is not that interesting, mainly involves implementing experiments and seeing if some metric moves in the right direction. CEO is absolutely paranoid about spending any money at all, every cost is restricted to the bone. Bring in your own coffee pods... Has been in a pretty poor office (though they are now moving somewhere bigger). Does not believe in inflation so you have to demonstrate performance improvement just to stay at the same real pay level. Has habit of periodically firing the entire marketing department.

Thanks for your feedback. Costs do matter - as post Series A that is how many startups end up dying. This is a reality - especially when every aspect of cost (software/server/marketing) costs are only going up, it is crucial to stay on top of all non essential spend. Our office is tired - we are at the end of a three year lease and the entire team is excited for a new, custom built space which is double the size. Coffee pods are bad for the environment. That said, the company spends a great deal on its team, so your characterisation isn't remotely accurate: -Coffee machine, beans, milk -quarterly budget for individuals for social dinner/entertainment for teams and squads -paid training, conferences -home office furniture -latest macbook pro -fully paid trip to an international destination for a company offside -fully paid trip to a uk country house for a company offsite -share options in the business -paid learning fridays once a month -amongst many other benefits The marketing team has grown rapidly and needs adjustment until we find a model that works - which we have indeed been getting closer to (as shown in the metrics). We appreciate we are a fast growing company figuring things out.

Pros

It's a big company with lots of cash in the bank. They work at a big scale. Shahzad Younas is an excellent, driven, and charismatic CEO. They ensure you maintain a good work / life balance.

Cons

Egocentric / elitist culture. CTO (Pe*** Mc*******) is not technical whatsoever so not suited to the role. High staff turnover. Old, bad quality PHP codebase. Horrendous onboarding process. Team of introverts, dev meetings / catchups are lifeless. No passion to better the product from the developers, everyone is just fighting fires.

Thanks for your review - and sorry things didn't work out here. We've come on quite a journey, with the backend team under new leadership and the team itself nearly doubling in less than a year. We're making solid progress as we transition away from Go and rebuild our entire architecture as well as other greenfield projects well underway. Always painful at the beginning but in time the fruits of this work are becoming increasingly apparent.
