I worked at NBBJ full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Tons of opportunity to do everything within HR, given the high turnover. Great architects and designers. Amazing minds to create impressive portfolios. Firm thinks outside the norms incorporating psychology, and clinical studies to its practice.

    Cons

Making friends internally is frowned upon. You would think that working with such a small yet mighty team, building and growing relationships would be valued. Quite the opposite is true, and instead you are spoken to about it. If you ever consider giving feedback, please know that you will be told that "if you are not happy an exit strategy will be provided". Constructive feedback is not valued, nor is it seen... as an opportunity for improvement. Culture is held so highly, that if you don't fit the mold, you are not seen as a good fit. Diversity and inclusion is lacking.

    Advice to Management

Consider that when HR modifies the exit interviews, leadership is not receiving the true picture as to why people are leaving. Leadership should consider doing skip-levels to check in on staff and provide a welcoming and interactive environment. NBBJ has so much potential to be a destination employer, but it lacks on development of its managers leaving staff to be frustrated causing high turnover.

I have been working at NBBJ full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nbbj has been such a refreshing workplace. The atmosphere is positive and forward thinking, they are edgy but also very professional. For an architecture firm, the workplace is not what you would expect- it’s very vibey and cool. I hope to work here for a long time. Designers mix in with operations and marketing and tech teams to create a really open and smart way of working. Definitely worth looking into jobs here... whether you are a designer or not! the open offices are also really cool to work in. Leadership is supportive and HR team is a great resource.

    Cons

The firm is pretty big, so you gotta put yourself out there to meet ppl and mix in.. but there are so many opportunities available to do this that it’s not that hard. there are lots of cross team events/informational etc

I have been working at NBBJ full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Being able to work with other studios on projects, fun getting to travel and get to know people in other offices.

    Cons

More chances to work on projects from home. Some projects last to long and you can feel stuck on them.

I worked at NBBJ full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Met and worked with some really talented people. Company lands a lot of and executes on some really cool projects. Employee benefits are very strong.

    Cons

Very much felt like high school again with the hierarchy and unwritten cultural rules. If you aren't in the 'cool' club your opinion isn't valued. HR Dept was a mess behind the curtain. Favoritism on the team was obvious, and so much so that it effectively cut down everyone else's ability to execute individually. It also made the rest of the dept feel alienated since they weren't the favorite.

    Advice to Management

Your employees are people with feelings, experiences, families, and struggles. They are humans, just like the senior leaders of the organization are. When an employee comes to you and says they are struggling with something, help them instead of firing them. When the leaders recognize that the humans in their organization are valuable and start treating them as such, the culture (and bottom line) will start to... improve by leaps and bounds.

I worked at NBBJ full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

There are many good things to say about what NBBJ produces, the quality of their design and the people that work there.

    Cons

However, they like to believe that everyone has a seat at the table and that they encourage free speech and ideas, but you learn quickly that you will not succeed at NBBJ, unless you start drinking the Koolaid and align yourself with the way they do things. Free thinking isn't what they truly want. and not everyone is "invited to participate at the table" , (only the chosen few). They also over massage ideas,... projects and plans to a fault. It can be frustrating sometimes to roll a product out.

    Advice to Management

Since diversity is a main topic these days. Remember that diversity doesn't just mean one thing. Embrace the idea that not everyone thinks like you do and that is a good thing.

I worked at NBBJ full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Opportunity to work on expansive, sometimes groundbreaking design for well known companies. Some of the employees are incredible peers and mentors! WFH flexibility when life happens. Great healthcare. Recommend working here for a short time just to get exposure to the above.

    Cons

Working late for presentations is an industry standard, but here it is relentless. Staffing and workloads are always hard to manage in this industry, but they seem to continually err on the side of understaffed, which means you'll be over worked. Too big. Principals are too protected.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more. Seattle is expensive. Having a passion for great design doesn't pay the water bill.

I worked at NBBJ full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Nice offices, strong portfolio of projects

    Cons

Severe micromanagement, disorganized leadership in NYC office, people play favorites, there are unfriendly and condescending people in positions of influence in the NYC studio. Leadership style does not inspire trust or confidence. I was given no work to do for months while repeatedly asking around for work to do, and quietly let go after being totally ignored for this time. Fake friendly culture.

    Advice to Management

Learn how to run a studio and properly plan for future growth (or non-growth). Stop putting people into positions of power who have zero people skills and talk down to their team members.
