Soul-crushing, but good benefits

Pros

Can meet some really awesome people; add-on benefits are nice. Plenty of vacation/time-off. There are good departments to be in and bad ones - and they all evolve over a period of several years. Get into a "good department," put your time in, then move on before the politics kick in (they inevitably do).

Cons

Can meet some people that are as dirty and vacant as a career politician; don't expect to get raises beyond inflation-rate unless you're really good at kissind behind; intelligence doesn't matter, as long as your degree matches slightly better and you've played the trump cards on connections, prior sucking up.
