Pros

Really awesome “individual contributors” — as NESN calls them — that are trying to make the company better. You’ll meet some really good people that actually care and have great ideas.

Cons

I have never once worked at a job that didn’t train me for the role I was hired to do… until I joined NESN. I was hired into a leadership role with direct reports, and on my very first day, I was simply placed at my desk with no formal training, resources, or support. You’re set up to fail immediately. I was confused and honestly appalled, because I always want to perform at my best, especially when I’m responsible for leading a team. You’ll be micromanaged, yet somehow senior leadership is practically invisible. As others have mentioned, senior team members relay information to middle managers, who then micromanage your work. It feels like you get no real direction from your actual bosses, but too much direction from the wrong people. It’s toxic and confusing. You’re also required to be in the office four days a week with basically zero flexibility. If you’re not there in person, you’d better be sick or have a valid excuse. The office itself is small and falling apart, with no real perks. You even have to pay for snacks and drinks in the break room… lol. But sure, come in for the “culture.” There was a lot of turnover in the short time I was there, not to mention layoffs that left really great, experienced people without jobs. I wouldn’t recommend working here unless you’re treating it as a stepping stone to gain experience, or you’re just starting out and willing to pay your dues to break into the sports/media industry.

Pros

People you work with everyday are brilliant, driven and hard working

Cons

Middle and upper management, for the most part, are so disconnected from the day-to-day of the company that they have no idea what's going on and where the company needs to improve. Mission of NESN's upper management is to just become a "yes person", dump the work on the middle manager who then dumps the work on their team and then the upper management collects a bonus because they're thought of doing a good job. The company laid off 20% of it's workforce after I left earlier in the year and the ask for everyone is still to do more and more. Zero accountability for the managers at the company. As long as they say yes to their boss their job is safe but they don't actually do anything or help find solutions to issues. Awful work/life balance. Make you come into the office four days a week for no reason at all other than to have you in meetings all day. Once you become a manager all it means is you are in meetings 24/7 and never actually getting work done. Then just dump work on your employees. For a media company NESN has always been 5 years behind. Even changes made when it seemed like they were getting more modern missed the mark completely. It's one person's vision for a demographic they have no idea about. Micromanagement which leads to a crippling anxiety to freely think Compensation is insanely low - for the amount of responsibilities you have and to live in the Greater Boston area

Pros

Some of your coworkers are cool. Benefits. Sports. The positives end there.

Cons

Can't speak for every department but for Master, middle/upper management is not on your side. I was hired seasonally, then became part-time, and was told by my boss I would be full-time a few months later. When nothing happened, I brought it up months later to a colleague, and he said he would discuss with my boss. My boss never brought it up to me again. During this time, I was scolded by him for not mentoring full-time employees more...as a part-time employee. Tone deaf as hell. They also talk badly about current and former employees behind their back, micromanage, do all the annoying stuff that makes working in the department stressful. Other cons include low pay and long/late/weekend hours (though that's most TV).
