Pros

Decent salary and the annual bonus is good. Took a supportive approach to remote working and return to office post-Covid. Lots of opportunities if you are a graduate trainee or come from a farming background.

Cons

Probably the most unusual insurance company I have ever worked for. Sales agents rule the roost and underwriting is a secondary consideration, you will find that any decision you make will get escalated through the various levels of seniority within sales until one of them gets the eventual answer that they want. Lots of kicking and screaming takes place along the way. Some of the interactions you can have with so called colleagues are tanamount to bullying and HR not interested in taking any action. Especially true if this relates to their self employed sales network. Definitely a blame culture as once, when requesting support with my workspace at home, was sent a response via the legal team as if I were trying to feign injury. Training drops off once you reach a certain level although they are not alone in this.

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about your experience at NFU Mutual. We’re pleased to hear you valued your salary and annual bonus, as well as the support offered around remote working and returning to the office after Covid. It’s disappointing to read that you felt other aspects of your experience fell short of what you expected, particularly in relation to workplace culture, decision-making, training and the interactions you describe. We’re committed to providing a great place to work and any behaviour that falls short of our standards is unacceptable. To support the standards of behaviour we expect, we provide Anti-Discrimination, Bullying and Harassment training across the organisation. We encourage our people to contact their line manager in the first instance if they experience or witness behaviour that falls short of our high standards. We’re also an organisation with zero tolerance of a blame culture, favouritism or misconduct, and want everyone to feel able to raise issues with confidence. All our people have access to Speak Up, which outlines the most appropriate route to raise concerns and helps ensure they’re dealt with fairly, properly and in confidence. Strong working relationships between our underwriting teams, sales colleagues and our UK-wide Agency Network are important to us. Our Agents are a distinctive part of our business and play a vital role in building personal relationships with our customers. At the same time, colleagues across the business should always feel supported, respected and able to make decisions with confidence. We’re always open to feedback on how these relationships and ways of working can be improved. We place our people at the heart of what we do and continue to invest in onboarding, development and career progression. Our annual employee engagement survey helps us track our progress and continually make meaningful changes. We also take the wellbeing of our people seriously, including where home working arrangements are in place, with assessments and reasonable adjustments provided where appropriate. Sometimes, people move on for reasons outside of work, but if you feel that workplace issues played a part in your decision to leave, we’d really like to understand more. If you’re comfortable, please email us in confidence at careersfeedback@nfumutual.co.uk so we can look into the points you’ve raised.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about life at NFU Mutual. We’re really pleased to hear that you view NFU Mutual as a great place to work, and that you’re experiencing a professional culture with opportunities to develop, build new skills and progress your career. It’s particularly valuable to hear this from someone with long‑standing senior experience with us. We also appreciate your feedback around salary increases and the rising cost of living. We understand that salary forms a very important part of the overall reward package, and we want all our people to feel valued in their role. We have a transparent reward framework, informed by industry benchmarking, which we regularly review to ensure it remains fair and competitive. Alongside salary, we offer a competitive total rewards package, including an annual bonus, pension and a range of benefits such as Medicash, as well as savings at high street retailers and supermarkets, supporting everyday costs and overall wellbeing. Thank you again for your insights, and for your continued contribution over the years.
