Pros

You're mostly working with nice people who all love the arts in some capacity. Has a professional atmosphere (not laidback like a small theatre company you'd find in Brooklyn), but there's always some exciting event going on. It's easy to get to know others. Very hands-on work--you're not pigeon-holed like at a larger company. It was a great place to intern and work right out of college. I learned so much.

Cons

There was a lot of restructuring going on when I was there and they were trying out a lot of new ideas, so there were some positions like mine that were going to be made permanent that weren't. As a non-profit, there's fewer chances for job openings or promotions into higher roles--though they do try to recognize people who have been putting consistent effort into their positions with a title change/some perks.

Pros

There are none. You are either part of their "1%" or you are not.

Cons

It is a country club with the upper management making in the hundreds of thousands (and many of them not worth it) and the lower-end staff not making enough to live on. For all their discussion about diversity, when it comes to hiring, if you want a low-level position working as an usher, sure, there is diversity, otherwise, forget it. Staff is over-worked and frequently doing the job of 2-staffers. They make decisions and then seem to think about them after the fact.

Pros

Great shows, poor pay. Most of the younger ushers treat you with respect and always lend a helping hand.

Cons

Some of the veteran ushers treat you as though you are fighting them for their job. On my first day, I was shadowing someone in the orchestra. When I introduced myself, she in turn said "who sent me this, " meaning me. Second day was also horrible. One usher asked me to get two programs for some older patrons . When I walked over to get the programs, another old angry female usher grabbed me by the arm and said "Where are you going?" Proceeding to call me a jerk when I told her to get her hands off of me. What a joke some of these people are. They act as if they live in the dark ages. No one should ever be treated like that anywhere as far as employment. I am warning any young hopeful to stay away from these sad people because it's not fair to work in such horrid conditions.
