Pros

Good benefits Good institutional knowledge in the field Scientists and lawyers are really nice People are smart (and often overqualified) Some are great and have good ideas but are overshadowed by others

Cons

Disrespect for many people working in development from other departments and GREAT disrespect for program assistants in this position. PAs are not treated well almost universally in this organization. Their work is often looked down upon. I left on my own accord but in the exit interview I mentioned this and they said that they would "try" to do a training on it. It's almost impossible to move out of a lower tier position unless you leave for a few years and get a better job. They are often elitist and have fair amounts of cronyism. They talk a big talk about diversity integration but they have nothing to show for it.

Pros

The staff are best in class - and the new hires are even better. Staff love the org, love their colleagues, and love the work. The vast majority are highly motivated to be on a path of constant improvement and collective decision-making and learning - the days of condescending know-it-alls are largely in the rear-view mirror (though a few remnants still linger). I've had excellent managers, made life-long friends, and have experienced great personal and professional growth because of my time with NRDC. The pay and benefits are well above market compared to similar non-profit orgs.

Cons

Leadership - many of whom are relatively new to the organization - don't seem to have control over the cultural and financial issues the org is facing right now. There hasn't been time allowed to build trust with new leadership, and the few touchpoints have fostered an air of skepticism. The culture, once strong, has faltered post covid. I really feel bad for new staff who didn't get to experience the exuberance of the office culture of yesteryear. I don't think mandatory time back in the office will do any good (would likely just build resentment), but something needs to change. Morale is at an all time low, at least in the last six years I've been here.

Pros

Good cause Great, long-suffering BIPOC staff in the lower-rung steps doing the work of senior management with no compensation

Cons

- Talks a great game about DEI, does nothing about promoting BIPOC staff. - No upward mobility for PAs. PAs of color have many more people to support than white PAs. Nearly all PAs are female and treated like the help, unless they are related to some senior staff or donor. - Internships go to children of donors first and then trickle down to one or two qualified candidates - Program heads are nearly all white and from the same network of friends and family. Only the president role has a diverse candidate but no president lasts because upper management is toxic and working to actively disempower him/her. - Many in HR just want to stay in favor of upper management and brush gross violations under the rug which leads to ex-employee lawsuits. - Like others said in the reviews, drives out people of color in droves. Can't keep a single black attorney because of the toxic culture.
