Pros

I've never worked for a company where what they told me in the interview (especially about company values and culture) align with what the job ends up being. Nathan James has lived up to and surpassed my expectations. Their operating values aren't just talking points—that's actually what guides how we operate. Work-life balance is important and emphasized. Asynchronous communication means that you can structure your day around your life and schedule as long as you're accountable for your work and get it done on time. Timelines for projects are also extremely realistic. I came from a fast-paced ad agency that over-communicated and had crazy deadlines. Nathan James has been the most refreshing change from that. Meetings are scarce, and the communication we do have is thoughtful and purposeful. Genuinely can't say enough good things about my experience at NJ so far.

Cons

Like others have said, fully remote work and async communication aren't for everyone. It works really well with my personality and work style, but I'd recommend you really read through NJ's operating values and about the company before applying. If you value work-life balance, hate unnecessary meetings, love clear expectations and don't need work to support you socially, then NJ is the place for you!

Refreshingly New, Transparent, People-First Work Experience

Pros

Refreshingly new outlook on what a successful work environment can look like. Shatters the mold of your standard 9-5, Monday-Friday, in-office job. Great "workplace" culture - very friendly, close-knit team with everyone completely buying in to the NJ way to garner overall growth & success. Extreme transparency throughout the company, from top to bottom. Always open to hearing their employees opinions, questions, or concerns. Provides individuals with all the means necessary to succeed in their role. Strong emphasis on maximizing individuals' strengths within their team and throughout the company. Strict adherence to their people-first Operating Values & Mission.

Cons

100% remote work is not for everybody; being a self-starting, autonomous, and well-disciplined individual goes a long way. Working 100% remotely may come with a steep learning curve for some. Patience, flexibility and willingness to adapt will be important on Day 1, Day 365 and so on.

A company that gets it

Pros

Being fully remote gives us the flexibility to live our lives how and where we want to. Depending on the position, the flexibility can be incredible (wanna work Wednesday and Thursday nights but take Mondays off - why not). This company has been really intentional about working remotely without turning your days into a series of six-hour conference calls. It's a company that actually cares about their employees. The profit share and other awesome benefits don't hurt either. There's a real sense that we're all working together, it doesn't feel like different departments have to compete to meet their goals.

Cons

The company is intentionally and thoughtfully siloed, but this can mean that you don't do a lot of deeply collaborative work across teams as a rule. These opportunities do come up (frequently, if you push for them), but by default you can expect to work within a very small circle at Nathan James. If you're an introvert, this works. As we're a fast-growing company, it can sometimes feel tough to book a vacation and actually remain offline. The day-to-day flexibility is great but until the team grows a bit more, taking more than a day or two is doable but challenging.
