Pros

You can work from home. Aside from the leadership, the staff is great to work with and talented.

Cons

Leadership is extremely naive and inexperienced in media and take micromanaging to an entirely new level. It makes your role very, very challenging and nearly impossible to succeed. You are constantly taking direction from domineering leaders who are not equipt to lead and have little understanding of the industry, reality and, sadly, business in general. Split second decisions are made and there is very little long term strategy or vision. Inefficient work practices due to micromanagement. You will work weekends and evenings and are expected to be at the beck and call of the leadership. Leadership is condescending. The company values, actions and policies 100% contradict the advertised mission of the company. Social progress and making a difference is the main reason many people join the company. I do not feel social progress is the true motivation behind this company. The event portion of the business seems to have very little to do with impact and working on these events is uncomfortable as they seem to have much more to do with the benefits that come with networking with wealthy, upper crust, white individuals. Dishonest during the interview process. Get everything in writing and do deep, deep background on the leadership and reach out to former employees.

Do Not Work or Partner w/NationSwell

Pros

Some of the work and clients are cool — but almost every agency and major corporation has a social impact practice now. Go elsewhere if you’re excited about doing impact focused work.

Cons

If you are considering working here — do not. If you are considering becoming a corporate partner — do not. You’d be supporting a culture of toxic positivity that cannot practice what it preaches. Leadership is wildly out of touch and more concerned with the optics of doing well by doing good than actually making meaningful impact. Like others have mentioned, they play favorites, expect you to bend over backwards and make decisions with a lack of transparency. Will also add that many of the strategic decisions on how to grow the business have been questionable at best and highlight the lack of business acumen the leadership team has. There’s also massive problems when it comes to pay equity and transparency. Finally, much of the talk around wellness and DEI is for show. It’s often expected of employees to work late, work while sick and to do it with a smile. There’s also a culture of passive aggression despite claiming to embrace a culture of consistent feedback

Pros

Most of the staff is hardworking, kindhearted and immensely proud of what they do. Really cool network though studio clients and council. Some of the clients are working on amazing things and making our country better. Remote work is the norm, even if they keep trying to making a return to office happen. Pay for new hires is constantly on the rise. Time off is fair.

Cons

Management is not transparent with how they make decisions about anything. It is very clear that they think some initiatives are more important than others, but the favoritism is never explained. You can spend months working on big projects, and have the entire division folded without ever being part of the conversation. Employees are selectively punished for breaking haphazard HR rules. The return-to-office rules and remote work policy are constantly changing and disadvantage employees who did not have the means to move out of nyc or san francisco during the pandemic. The entire staff is burned out. The company often talks about work culture with its clients, and helps them think through how to address it and build a humane workplace. It gets demoralizing to sit in on events discussing the topic with clients, and not have serious solutions be proposed at home. We get zoom parties and balloons, but serious structural help is not discussed.
