Horrible place to work

Pros

Most employees, whether veterans or not, sincerely care about honoring those interred in National Cemeteries. People in the field/at the cemeteries typically go out of their way to accommodate families for services and such. People in the regional offices and central office are out of touch with what it takes to actually run a cemetery, yet all they do is make poor decisions that negatively effect the day to day operations at the cemetery level.

Cons

Too much micro management! As mentioned above, regional offices and central office make unrealistic demands on local cemetery staff just to justify the high salaries of the higher ups. When the occasional knowledgeable person is hired, the management above them does not listen to their input. Leadership is very poor starting at the top and going down through all of the middle management. Poor communication from the top down - messages do not get filtered down to the field very well.

Worst place in the world to work

Pros

Strongly support taking care of veterans and doing what is necessary to care for people that have served their country by serving in a branch of the armed forces. Allow limited telecommuting.

Cons

Horrible or no leadership. No direction or guidance provided by leadership. If managers are questioned on a shortcoming, they end up harrasing you since you questioned them. No investment in education or professional development. No room for advancement. Telecommuting is limited due to lack of comfort with the concept and how to manage remote workers. Managers do not know how to manage employees. Instead they micro manage because they do not understand most of what their subordinates do for their job. Lack of understanding leads to BS and CYA approach ot most aspects of management. Run in the other direction if you get a job offer from this company!

Pros

Rewarding work. Internal hires are highly prioritized so potential to quickly move up as turnover rate is pretty high; also a con because you end up with inadequate people in positions they shouldn't be in. A decent amount of overtime available but it also becomes mandatory if noone wants to work it so be careful with that. Opportunity to learn a ton of grounds related skills but don't expect proficient training or any dedicated training for that matter.

Cons

Toxic environment where bullies are enabled, HR is no existent, and same goes for the union. Turnover rate is out of control and employees are simply thought of as bodies. No effort to build retention rates from an incrediblely disorganized management team which contradicts themselves, shares their lack of knowledge of important job related principles, gets caught up in petty office dramas, tries to place employees in positions, bairly manages their team, and in general gets caught up in the 'why do we bother with middle management and what do they even do?' You'll be frustrated to mediocrity where hard work isn't rewarded and avoiding work is its own reward. An antiquated employee of the month system keeps things interesting as employees are ironically nominated based upon who works the least or who management hates the most. The pay isn't great for most areas as it fell behind property values drastically. The benifits are pretty mediocre too, 75% isn't great when the local government jobs provide 100%.
