Don't Work Here

Pros

I made a few friends here. The benefits are pretty good since they match retirement and provide grant-in-aid should you wish to go back to school.

Cons

Do not work here. Unless you're one of the lucky ones to be in a position of power with no knowledge of your job, then be prepared to be treated like dirt. Those in the executive office do not care about their underlings. It's pretty obvious how unhappy most of the employees are here, yet they do nothing to rectify the issues. They hold meetings to make you feel like your voice has been heard, but then months down the line when you're wondering about these "changes" that are supposed to happen, you hear nothing. There's also a lot of gossip that goes around campus, so be aware of who you speak to and be careful of what you say. The pay is laughable and there is no push to hire more staff to areas that need it - instead, they just pile more duties onto existing employees. Meanwhile, those same employees see no benefit of the added duties, such as a raise or recognition. It's cool though, you will get blamed for things when they aren't done right or not done on time, despite being stretched thin. The culture is that it's every man for himself. No one has any accountability for their behaviors/words/actions. It's never anyone's fault - it's always someone else's fault. There are employees on campus who push their job duties onto others, even if it's a different department, because of this mentality of "it's not my job", even when it is. There is a huge lack of support, especially from the higher-ups. No sense of community whatsoever. There is also a lot of unfairness in the workplace. There are employees that come in late and leave early, while at the same time still take a lunch, despite the work hours being 8-5. Even when these issues are brought up, no one does anything. Don't waste your breath trying to rectify issues because no one cares. Some offices/departments are allowed more flexibility than others regardless of what their department/office does. The salary differences between certain positions on campus make no sense considering the job duties of those positions. There is also a level of bias from upper-management who should not make decisions based on gossip or personal dislike of an employee or employees. Opinions should not reflect your decision; it should be based on facts and objectivity. There are also barely any opportunities to grow within the college, so if you're OK with staying in one position for X amount of years, then this is the place to be. I cannot reiterate enough the amount of people in positions who are not qualified to be in that position. There are directors who cannot control their own departments and can't accept responsibility of their department when they mess something up; there are people who screw up majorly in a previous position and then get promoted to a position with even more responsibility; there are people who are in positions where there is a certain amount of knowledge that should be known, but fail to retain that knowledge or don't even bother caring to know it.

Pros

I found some lifelong friends through co-workers. You can go from a teaching position to top manager without applying/interviewing for job! If you are in the, "in crowd" you will get promoted regularly. People do not really pay attention if you come to work or not, no one has been fired for bad performance since I have been an employee. Even though many people do not do their job or sometimes do not show up. Parking is free. Vacation and sick time is very generous.

Cons

Shady practices among management where individuals get promoted even if they are not qualified for any management level job. Human Resources does nothing to monitor rights and equality. High employee turn-over rates, every 3 years there is a whole new set of staff in all departments. Management has a, "it's them" attitude when employees express their discontentment. Over 10 employees in one department left the institution in a span of 3 years. They hire student workers for professional positions without proper experience or education. No sense of school spirit. Employees do not show up to work or come late and no one notices nor says anything. Always say,"we are brand new school, there are growing pains" to justify horrible management practices and policies. There are many employees that come on as an, "emergency hire" which is usually a family member or friend of the hiring manager. Usually if a job is posted, it is already reserved for someone in mind, wasting applicants time.
