Pros

Awesome SITE staff, GREAT students There are ABSOLUTELY NO other pros!!!!!

Cons

Requiring staff to write positive reviews to get a higher star rating. Working 65 -70 hours per week, no lunch or breaks (even though you are required to FALSIFY documents stating that you took lunch and breaks!). If you think about the amount of hours you’re working, the pay isn’t that great. Essentially, your making minimum wage. Work includes weekends! Being micromanaged by “RETIRED” staff. A new CEO was named nearly 2 years ago but the Hawks do not allow him to make decisions. All communication from him comes directly from the Hawks which make the new CEO appear incompetent! Extremely toxic work environment and abusive communication. Although feed back is asked from employees, it is welcomed. The former CEO, John Hawk, consistently reminds staff that you are either on the ranch or you’re off. Many talented and dedicated staff resigned due to the constant abuse and lack of respect for personal time, in fact 11 employees quit in the span of 8 - 9 months!!! If all of this information isn’t enough, on evaluations, supervisors are required to list one positive and 3 things that you need to improve on EVEN IF YOU’VE DONE EVERYTHING AT EXCEEDS STANDARD!!! This is the abuse you will endure working for this place!

Disservice to Awesome Students

Pros

The students are some of the most motivated and intrinsically good humans I’ve ever worked for. Meeting with them made my job worthwhile. Pay was awesome too along with potential for performance incentives throughout the year.

Cons

Toxic work environment and long, grueling hours. Essentially, if one is looking for strong work/life balance, this is not the place. Because it’s a skeleton crew, the workload is tremendous. The job that would normally take a team of 3-4 school counselors was placed on my shoulders. That’s a similar theme for every other role too. Although pay was good, it involved long hours, no winter/spring/summer breaks, and countless hours of looking at data. Leadership doesn’t care to change or grow. Most hide in the central office and cowardly ignore parental concerns until it’s directly in their faces. Staff is expected to handle nearly everything on their own. Strong leaders reflect and try to better. I never felt comfortable or confident in the decision making that came out of the leadership team.

Please do not seek employment at NSHS.

Pros

Some great, dedicated people who tried mightily to support student under constant duress and harassment.

Cons

I apologize to everyone I had a part in bringing to NSHS. It is the most toxic culture I have encountered. Decent compensation is countered by an expectation of prolonged hours due to staffing shortages. Executive leaders permitted to rule without oversight from the token board and charter school authority. School board has no presence in daily operations and ignore pleas from faculty, parents and students. Outside of CEO, a 0% retention rate of employees hired during my tenure. Read the exit surveys. Leadership will tell you not everyone can live up to expected values. Values at NSHS are a mere list of unfulfilled words. This is a sinking ship. The 1970s culture of abuse is unsustainable. They're at less than 50% staffing and 0 employees at their flagship site.

Thank you for your honest review of your experience working at NSHS. The school founders are no longer a part of the organization and current leadership is working to restructure the organizational structure and school culture to make NSHS a better place to work moving forward. We are also working to modernize operations and move away from antiquated processes/practices, including digitizing tracking of student social events, streamlining student transcript requests, reducing student scorecard requirements, and more. While we know that cannot change the experience you had at NSHS, current leadership is working to change the working experience at NSHS moving forward.
