Why this place sucks to work at.

Pros

Good place for an engineer to learn about automotive systems.

Cons

The stupidest thing about New Flyer is that they make salaried employees punch a clock and harass you if you are late. The second stupidest thing related to the first thing is that the work hours are 7 am to 3:30 pm. So if you punch in at 7:03 am you are considered late. Call me high maintenance or stuck up but telling salaried staff they are 3 minutes late is stupid. Also add to the fact that they didn't pay out overtime. So in summary, as a salaried employee at New Flyer Industries you punch clock, your insubordinate if you come in late, don't get paid overtime, and the wages were crap. Add to the fact that your in Winnipeg Canada and what New Flyer attracts is people who really need a job afraid to take risks and afraid to be creative who keep their jobs if they stay inside the box. I thank them that they did employ me, but I wasn't happy there.

Boring and stable

Pros

Good benefits. Decent salary. Almost impossible to be fired (ie, very stable). Paul Sourby is a great CEO. The company's business is doing good, they are expanding and opening lots of positions. Well-known company, so it looks good on resume. This is a great job for those who prefer to live from paycheck to paycheck without being too involved.

Cons

Quite a bit toxic atmosphere. Highly resistant to changes. Lots of "copy-pasting" (ie, very repetitive work). Very manual work with little to no desire to automate anything. Slim career growth opportunities within the department due to high number of "lifers." The only option - is to change department (read - career) within the company. Swipe-in for salary employees. Poorly balanced in genders (I'd say it's 80:20 male-female ratio). Very poor communication within the company (though I've gotta give them a credit: they have started to try). Weird company values that aren't very applicable to the work itself. Poor overtime policy. Many HR-related polices are hidden and barely accessible. Lots of micromanagement. Vacation policy is minimal for starters, though if you have lots of experience you can negotiate. Not very good place for young people to work because it is truly boring and doesn't offer real career development. Not a lot of internal training/learning, even though they have a special section for it on internal website. Network constantly has issues (either phones, or Oracle, or drives are always out). Outdated software.
