We are glad to read that you found some of your experiences and relationships valuable. We are sorry to hear that you were unable to find enough free time to explore Costa Rica outside of our cultural immersion experiences or during your vacation time, breaks and/or 2 days off a week, or that you found it challenging to pay for a (USA?) lifestyle and that you found the administration to be unhelpful in your adaptation. We do not find this to be the common experience of our employees, but it certainly can be hard to come to a different country and adapt to the lifestyle and language, so we do understand it's not for everyone.

Pros

You get to live in Costa Rica and build relationships with interesting staff from all over the world and with the boys. The best part of the internship was working with the boys. They are wonderful and yes struggling but you have the chance to be a positive role model. It's a great way to give back to our youth.

Cons

HR is unprofessional and make anything you sign feel like a trap. Owners micro manage which make it hard to have stability in the work environment. There is zero training and the staff is plagued with unintentional (most of the time) sexist comments which make it frustrating when trying to role model for unstable young men. The school is not what the market as a "holistic" and "humanistic" approach to psychology. High turn over rate because of lack of stability and communication between departments which make it difficult and frustrating to work.

We are sorry that you had a poor experience in Costa Rican and at NSA. We actually do not have a high turnover rate at all as we have 33% of our staff working with us over 10 years, 33% for 5-10 years, 17% for 2-5 years, and 17% under 2 years. Those are pretty good statistics. We understand that an owner-operated model can be challenging in some ways and yet it is also what promotes trust in our program since there is a personal investment in providing the highest quality of care and risk management. That said, we will work on taking a step back and empowering experienced, ethical, resilient, creative, collaborative, well-trained staff to take the reigns.

Pros

I've been working here for over 15 years. It is a very calm place where we get to be our true authentic selves, we get to help young men plant seeds on their journey to a healthier life. NSA has always being supportive to my wants and needs, they've been a great help towards my family, at providing opportunities for them to grow alongside me. It is truly a blessed place for everyone, staff and students.

Cons

I honestly do not have any negative thoughts.

Thank you for recognizing the family-oriented approach we take as well as the efforts to allow each person to bring their unique talents and skills to our culture. Your years of experience and efforts have certainly made an impact on many lives as you continuously find inspiring ways to integrate students into the best that Costa Rican culture has to offer! Thank you for your feedback about the flow of communication! With an ever-evolving student group, staff group and culture that tries to empower each member to impact and improve the culture, communication can be tough at times. We will continue working on it!
