Pros

Great brand(s) that attract smart people. You will meet talented individuals and gain tons of experience. Flexible time off policy and extremely casual dress code. Impressive on CV.

Cons

New York Media is a 50-year-old startup that excels at concealing its many flaws and shortcomings to those on the outside. Expect low pay, long hours, no feedback, and little to no support, whether it be onboarding (doesn't exist) or meaningful feedback. Internal processes are nonexistent, inconsistent, or horrifically inefficient. The culture is soul-crushing. Zero morale and depressingly cliquey. There is little to no communication or collaboration between departments. No one knows who does what. Even within departments, people would rather Slack the person sitting next to them than have an actual conversation. It’s every person for themselves, finger pointing, and “that’s not my responsibility”. Consequently, there is extremely high turnover. HR takes forever to hire, so when someone on your team quits, you will be expected to pick up the slack for a while. Regarding diversity, do not be fooled by The Cut. NYM pays lip service to diversity and inclusion but the overall culture/management is very white. I have been shocked by the ignorance/tone-deaf comments by some of my former coworkers. There is no 401K matching. Employees have been asking for years. The cons are in all departments. I’ve spoken with people in other roles and it’s incredible how the experience is consistent across the board. Edit, Dev, Sales, everybody. The culture that makes that place so miserable trickles down from upper management. It is a true shame that things are the way they are at New York Media, but it’s very, very hard to imagine them changing anytime soon. Avoid for the sake of your mental health.

Pros

- Flexible work environment - Unlimited vacation policy - Good, respected brand

Cons

- Unpleasant, demotivating company culture. It truly doesn't seem like anybody is happy. The negativity is crippling! - Leadership is allover the place. Nobody knows who reports to who, or who does what. It's impossible to get a straight answer about *literally* anything. - Upper management is inexperienced. - There is no process or structure in this organization. It is the wild wild west. - Abysmal communication between departments.

Needs Diversity

Pros

A lot of potential in growing platforms.

Cons

The diversity here is more for decoration instead of for growth. Being apart of the VERY few people of color, I felt uncomfortable expressing my ideas as I was once told I was too “opinionated”. I would often receive more backlash for mistakes compared to other co-workers and co-workers often resisted talking to me directly compared to others in my department. Everyone here is essentially from the same kind of background those who aren’t are sadly invisible and unfairly treated.
