Company In Trouble

Pros

There were a lot of great people at the company

Cons

We've had many people quitting and getting laid off. That's caused a big problem cause most of the best folks we had are gone now. Even the leadership team bailed since they didn't believe in where the company was heading. And let me tell you, things are pretty chaotic here. The basics aren't even set up properly in different departments like engineering, product, HR, and all that. The only thing that matters is showing some result *immediately* at all cost. It's a big mess. Here's the weirdest part: almost everyone here is Chinese, but we're supposed to build a local news product for Americans. It just doesn't add up, right? And you'd think talent and good communication would be valued, but nope! The CEO is all about seeing people working late and following his requests to a T. He churns the org regularly and forces them to conform to his whims... which are nearly always ill-conceived. Honestly, it feels like we're going backward instead of moving forward. I've been here for over three years, and it's like we're back to where we started. I don't believe this company can bounce back anytime soon.

Pros

Free lunches, Decent healthcare benefit, Retirement matching. Not much else to rave about.

Cons

NewsBreak has some serious flaws as a company. With poor work-life balance, minimal benefits other than healthcare, waining stock options, and non-competitive wages, this place is on a serious downward spiral. This company is China based with about half of its workforce in the US. Very clearly run as a Chinese company. After laying off a sizeable chunk of its workforce (at least 25%), the company is heading a spontaneous new direction after spending 3 years growing and building a sizeable workforce. This company repeatedly hires over its best people, meaning that even if you work hard and fill in the gaps of other roles, the company will neither reward you with higher salary/bonuses/stock options nor promote you to a higher position, just hire someone else and pay them more money to do your job. I saw it numerous times in different departments. This company had no system for increasing wages over time, and annual bonuses were often 3-5 months late. The options for lunches are either greasy asian food or salads. The company is going to be full time in the office, without any of the benefits that come with that. Their security also sucks. With multiple data breaches, including, at one point, all employees personal data. Offsite events are few and far between. The culture is just all about work, management is very political and hard to break into. Would not recommend this company but if you do only for a year and then GTFO.

Pros

Product(NewsBreak app) growth was good, some engineers are good. Growth team was top notched.

Cons

Too much office politics in China Office(Beijing). Leader was unclear where the product was going. The early hires at company refuse to take in any new ideas. If you were new to the team, nobody gonna help you familiar with the environment. ONLY the early recruits were trusted. And you always have to work overtime and the leadership take it for granted. No work-life balance at all for engineers. Also, you worked was basically following every order they gave you, no questions asked. And the worst thing above all, the leadership team is not HONEST! (product stats, your comp, etc)
