Once great, in desperate need of new leadership

Pros

- Many of the client-facing employees at Next PR are extremely impressive PR pros. I'd happily work with the majority of the current employees again. - Before 2022ish, the culture was excellent - Unsure if these have changed but the company's benefits were impressive during my time. Benefits included free healthcare, Summer Fridays, day off to vote, winter break, etc.

Cons

The last few years have changed the entire reputation and culture of the company. Between raises and promotions being well below industry standard and a concerning amount of client cancellations, the company hasn't been healthy in terms of employee experience or revenue for a while. A major morale shift happened when the COO/CEO said on an all-company call there were no plans of layoffs, then proceeded to lay off staff just three weeks later with no explanation or empathy. For a company that touted being employee/people-first, layoffs were handled extremely insensitively. No questions asked, no forewarning, no consulting with direct managers to gauge performance before deciding, no correlation with the client accounts lost/the people laid off as is typical in professional services companies, etc. The company then had the audacity to pursue PR opportunities (bylines to publications/commentary) just months later about how to "handle layoffs right" which was extremely tone-deaf. The COO had no PR agency experience before her role, no HR experience, no financial leadership experience, and no communications experience, and it is increasingly evident as the agency suffers on several accounts. It's a nice story having the COO and CEO of a company be childhood best friends, but experience is important for business growth. It's not a coincidence the agency has struggled so much.

Good place for early career

Pros

Next PR is a good agency to learn many different aspects of PR very early and quickly. If you raise your hand, you will have opportunities to learn new skills and get experience in different client industries. The people are generally very supportive of you and your growth if you take initiative to ask questions and try new things. This is a good place for people who are starting out in PR and would like to gain client-facing experience super quickly. The CEO is very big on doing what scares you and facing your fears, so if you're someone who doesn't like to be pushed out of your comfort zone, then this wouldn't be the best place for you. If you thrive in 'learning by doing' environments and know the value in stepping outside your comfort zone early and often, this place will be beneficial for your overall professional journey. Despite the company and culture politics that come with being a small agency, I truly believe this company is a great place to learn and grow professionally if you're early in your career and willing to put in the effort.

Cons

Because it is such a small agency, it's hard to get ahead if you have a different point of view and challenge the status quo. There are many Next PR "lifers" (employees that have only ever worked there since graduating college or for 10+ years) that pull the strings and ultimately make all the decisions. If one day they decide that your personality isn't a fit, you will be treated terribly until you decide to resign. I witnessed this happen to several employees during my tenure. They say they are very DEI-focused, but if you raise questions or concerns about any of the employees in leadership who have been at the company for a long time, they will at most get a slap on the wrist and you will have a target on your back. If you raise a valid concern that makes them uncomfortable to answer, they most always will respond with "what I'm hearing you say is..." and then twist and convolute your words so that it can fit their agenda and make you feel gaslit. I don't think this is an inclusive environment for anyone that doesn't fit their cookie cutter personalities or way of thinking. Many of my colleagues and I also lost faith in their business model and overall health of the business. For several years in a row, they handed out HUGE end of year gifts to employees, with the most extravagant one being an all inclusive trip to Mexico for all ~50 employees at the end of 2022. About a quarter of those employees ended up resigning within the next 3 months after the trip. Since returning from that trip, they have also been on a promotion and raise pause. They laid off client-facing employees after explicitly saying multiple times that they would never conduct layoffs, yet they keep around several employees who have elected to be non client-facing. It just seems like they spent any extra money they had very carelessly without anticipating or accounting for potential business challenges. The monthly business updates they shared consistently made no sense and their projections were consistently wrong. Many of their really great employees who they relied on to train new team members, lead client accounts and bring in new business have left following the less than hopeful business outlook.

Heather here: I appreciate you taking the time to leave this thorough review – all feedback helps Next PR grow as an organization. I’m glad to hear you learned a lot during your time here. We pride ourselves on giving every team member at every level opportunities to advance their career and learn about the different aspects of PR that are most interesting to them. There is always room to grow and learn from our experiences, so thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention. We never want a team member to feel their opinions are not valued or being taken seriously. We offer many forums to share feedback – both directly and anonymously – for our team to discuss concerns about any topic, including company culture and business outlook. Transparency is a key pillar of our values. We share monthly business updates so everyone at the agency understands our current position as a business and the work we’re all doing to continue growing. We’ve also conducted town halls with all team members about our promotion process, as well as 2:1 conversations with the COO and myself to discuss career advancement with each team member individually. The terminations last year were not made lightly and accounted for many factors, even if they weren’t apparent to the larger team out of respect for our team members’ privacy. Regarding your comment on our non-client-facing team members, these types of internal roles are essential for running a business. They maintain our operations, processes and systems, enabling client-facing teams to focus on delivering excellent service to our clients. The unfortunate reality was that soon after the all-company retreat, a way to reward our team for the year of hard work, the company took many unpredictable hits to its client roster, and in turn, revenue. The pause on promotions and raises, while difficult, was a necessary measure to stabilize our finances and ensure company longevity and most importantly, our team’s jobs. While we have started giving promotions again, we’re still looking for ways to support our team every day. This feedback will be taken into consideration as we evaluate our processes and culture.
