Write ups, write ups, write ups. There’s not a night that goes by that you won’t see 1 to about 5 employees getting written up for common and the slightest of mistakes. As someone else mentioned, forget to bring a side of mayo to a guest on a night as busy as Mother’s day...write up for you, a long sit down, then a follow up by “the higher ups”...ie, Nick himself hiding behind some corporate curtain demanding for absolute, 100% perfection, or 3 writeups and by by you.
I LOVE restaurants and I LOVE serving. Sure, every restaurant comes with some stress and rough shifts, but you can count on every moment being more intense than the ICU and ER of your local hospital.
I also managed restaurants, ran business, and read a ton of case studies and business books. Nicks is truly the worst I’ve ever experienced, read about, or even heard about.
And as far as turn over, forget about. I know I know, the restaurant industry’s turnover is high and typically sits between 40 and 50% for staff. Nicks, try tripling that number and there’s great reason why. The stress of being command to be a perfect robot when you’re actually a human being is hard. And the management turn is even worse. I’m the 12 months or so I was there, the GM position turned 3 times, and even a 4th after the month I left, and the assistant managers are in and out. I can’t even tell you how many turned in the year cause it was nonstop.
I never had a write up prior to Nick’s. I believe I’m accountability, rules, and like to the best of jobs. 11 years prior to Nick’s, 0 writeups. 12 months with Nicks, chalk me up for 9. To give you an idea, I sold $2,200 on a double one day. I accidentally put the dressing on the side when the guest didn’t ask for it on the side. The manager ran the salad. The guest asked if it was extra dressing. Manager said no, it’s on the side for you. They said, it’s fine they’d just pour it on. They later complimented me to the management as we all really enjoyed each other, BUT, at the end of the shift, I was sitting down with management for 15-20 minutes for a writeup on compromising the guest experience, product, and putting out a negative image for the restaurant.
In summary...just stay away! I work at North Italia down the street and it’s FANTASTIC!!
And as you’ll read in other reviewers, the money is no better on average than anywhere else in Manahhatan Beach and the surrounding area.
