Pros

It (barely) paid my rent for a little over three years. For transparency that’s 10.50$ an hour to prep all the food that’s eaten on a game day. I’m now 26 and have a wonderful job outside of hotel & restaurant management and also the state. This work experience was over six years ago and it still absolutely haunts me. By sharing my experience I hope this can help some kid pick their first or second job in the loveliest village in the plains. For comparison McDonald’s was a much more positive experience than the one I had at Niffers. In today’s economy you do not have to accept the first job that falls into your lap.

Cons

I prepped the food for the Auburn location for three consecutive years in a row, during football season some of my shifts would run around 12 hours long. During my time here the kitchen as a whole received a long lecture from the owner of all three establishments about the definition of theft and that if we were to eat any of her food she was fully prepared to notify law enforcement. I’m not joking. There were no shift meals for the kitchen at the time of my employment at Niffers , staff did however receive a 40% discount for all meals on days worked. As a twenty year old paying rent on my first apartment I very much depended on this job and did not take the responsibility lightly. This resulted in an average of 5 shifts a week for me. Unfortunately during my time here my health began to decline, at 21 years old I suffered from reoccurring bronchitis. This averaged in about 2 sick days a month. Managements solution to this issue was to apply work pressure, when I came to work sick as a result they were irritated. After a few months of throwing up in a trash can while preparing food we fed to the customers, the end of my employment at Niffers drew near. Management decided it would be fitting (and somehow legal) to contact my primary care physician. My doctor told the manager that reached out to him that he was in fact my primary care physician and that he was not at liberty to discuss my health with them in regards to HIPAA. This wasn’t a satisfying answer, the manager who contacted my doctor fired me with the excuse “I talked to your doctor he says he hasn’t seen you in a while” after I asked her for help on the line during a Saturday morning rush.
