Pros

- Higher than average base salary for a startup in the Phoenix area - Some talented employees - Free coffee - Nice gym

Cons

- Horrendous healthcare benefits - No snacks or drinks provided - Projects are never ending - Unrealistic timelines - No work life balance - “Unlimited vacation” means you are still expected to work during time off - Clear divide between employees with stock options vs RSUs. Employees with stock options may stay, while those with RSUs will leave in the coming months.

As a current employee, please don't ever shy away from providing honest and direct feedback directly to your leader or the executive team. Our doors are open and we're anxious to get better. Our benefits reflect our organization's pre-revenue status (e.g. high deductible health plans), and we're working to improve them as we grow. Again, please share your candid thoughts with us directly, along with suggestions for improvement, so that we can grow and improve together.

Pros

Nikola had a bright future, we had money and a blank slate for vehicle development, as an engineer it was quite good in the early days.

Cons

During the turnover of multiple CEOs many people within the company promoted themselves to leadership positions that have no idea how to properly engineer a vehicle or lead successful teams. As a result, the company has an overwhelming number of employees in upper management. This company loves to throw job titles around whenever an employee is ready to leave as a bargaining chip, they are not earned over years of time like in other companies. Most of these employees come from other companies with little to no upper management experience and prefer to live in ignorance when problems arise within vehicle development and point fingers to other teams. This has led to a company run by hundreds of engineers with inflated titles who are rewarded by being smooth talkers and not developing vehicles. The end result is a poorly engineered product that is dangerous, hard to manufacture, not profitable and unreliable. The company recently enacted an unannounced and immediate mass layoff which has increased the demand of everyone's work and unmotivated all employees. Many of the laid off employees were ones that did actual work and much knowledge on how to continue to manufacture vehicles was lost. This new set of challenges has led to a financially unstable work environment. As a result nearly all my peers left or are looking to exit and stopped collaborating. I urge anyone considering to join Nikola to consider any other company.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, startups are hard and we’re trying to do something very difficult. That is, disrupt a very old and dirty trucking industry with zero emission trucks of the future. Changing the world takes money and our spending habits got a bit out of hand. So, last month we restructured the company to secure a better future. We’re now in a much more sustainable financial position. We’re coming off our best sales quarter ever and with the launch of our flagship hydrogen fuel cell electric truck, we believe the future is very bright. By the way, we asked around and we’d love to know how we can promote ourselves into to leadership positions. Sounds like it may be lucrative. In all seriousness though, we’re sad to read how discouraged you’ve become. Please feel free to discuss your concerns by setting up a private meeting with anyone in leadership. You will be heard. Or, if you’re comfortable, you can ask any question/raise your concerns at the next all hands meeting. And, of course, as always, you can come see us in HR. We’d love to help.

Pros

Very little - nice facility, pay is ok, some good people

Cons

Where to start ? Whole bunch of side projects which are a drain on resources - thankfully this is being curtailed now. Global engineering head and most technical directors quite simply don’t have what it takes (experience or leadership or team work or track record or engineering skill) to lead a company like this to success. Certain large teams have very little to do (partners doing everything) but still keep hiring and they don’t restrict it or set goals that need to be met. Very little goals are set at the team level and reviewed by management to measure if they are performing at an adequate level. The CEO has no clue how teams are being run or what the outcomes are, this is a small company so sit down with teams once a quarter to get a pulse. It’s not rocket science. There are only a few engineers really good at what they do, most of them are quite average which is not enough at a startup. The amount of politics and toxic work culture and insidious behaviors are mind boggling. Either the management is completely unaware (unlikely) or are just not bold enough to act. If you are a really good engineer, do yourself a favor and don’t join Nikola. It’s extremely poorly run and lots of inflated titles for people who are not good enough which will really demotivate you. Find other companies that cultivate a good culture and one that rewards the right mindset and skills because this one does not.

Thank you for taking the time to share your insights. As you know first hand, this past year has served an important role in getting focused on the most important things we must accomplish as a company. We have made a series of hard calls to get us aligned with those objectives and continue to do so recognizing that a five-year-old company is going to experience growing pains as we, and the industry in general, continues to evolve at a rapid pace. This is one of the reasons Nikola has always tried to maintain a flat structure, knowing that reporting layers can create barriers to innovating, moving fast, and acting as owners -- core values that have been key to our success in growing from a basement startup into a publicly-traded company. As a current employee, please consider meeting confidentiality with a member of the HR team to discuss your feedback in greater detail and to work together to develop actionable solutions.
