First, nearly all of the 5 star reviews here are lies deliberately multiplied and planted by someone in upper management (which means, one of 3 people). This is known by everyone, as they invert and then praise the most hideous aspects of the company. So as a potential recruit, you are safe to assume the exact opposite is true of every gushing point made in the 5 stars.
Yet a small number of people do seem genuinely happy in this environment. This has led me to model the company, not as a police state run by a psychopath -- which is everyone's first impression -- but rather as a large, patriarchal family run by a father who always knows best and is a stern disciplinarian. He has to take you out to the woodshed every so often to maintain the family discipline, or shame you in front of the rest of the family. But Father loves his children and it is all for the good. There are a couple types of people that enjoy this kind of environment and even thrive in it.
There is no written documentation for anything, and requirements for tasks are also never written, even in an email. Thus every achievement, even impressive ones, is liable to be torn down upon delivery and insulted according to the CEO's new and completely arbitrary vision. At first I thought the lack of any paper trail for earlier design decisions, and even interfaces, was just due to lack of time to put standard engineering practices into place. But every attempt to aid in establishing such practices is also subverted by the CEO. He actually likes the non-accountable chaos and insists on it, possibly because it is more consistent with his artibrary rule as a patriarch.
