Rampant Systemic Racism

Pros

Wonderful mandate to inspire young minds about STEM.

Cons

1. The majority of employees feel that it is a toxic and poisonous work environment. 2. The management team is entirely caucasian and refuses to promote or encourage racialized peoples into management. Racialized employees are treated differently and are not as valued as white employees, especially white women. This was reported repeatedly to HR, senior management and the ministry (MTCS) and they refused to act. In fact, the organization has failed to act on the Ontario government's Anti-Racism Plan. The organization is also being sued for racial discrimination. 3. There is a small group of senior managers who are abusive to their staff. 4. Bullying is permitted by certain staff members, notably the majority group.

Pros

-Great team player environment among designers, researchers and production crew -Lots to learn in building high-quality exhibits in-house from start to finish -Has a lot of talented employees with very different skill sets who can work well together if communication amongst the different branches is made more direct.

Cons

- There are too many managers looking into the same projects, and this has a negative impact on making the right decisions as there are too many opinions. - There needs to be more direct communication links between branches and depts, not just so that everyone is on the same page, but also because it allows for more collaborative work. - Although a great working environment, it doesn't feel like the Science Centre is growing and seems somewhat isolated compared to its competitors. It is very capable of becoming the Ontario platform for science learning (and it once was) by consistently discussing new science topics, introducing more edgy exhibits, bringing important speaker events and showing more collaboration with other Toronto/ Canada institutions that share similar topics.
