Pros

A handful of times I dialed into the standup meeting a couple of minutes late. This was a huge problem for the chief science officer, but for me as well. The standup meeting was useless, it’s just “I’m awake, near my computer, and I’m working on my tickets”. In other remote places we would post this in slack. No need for a meeting. I complained about this, and the fact that I have to repeat the exact same status twice more in the same day but was told that this is very rigid and if I can’t be in that meeting at 10:00 pst sharp, this is not going to work. Since I’m an engineer, I half jokingly proposed a solution - what if I move to a different time zone…. … and was told that was an excellent idea. I moved to mexico soon after and was never late to the “I’m working on my tickets” meeting. A sane person would have probably loosened up the standup format, but hey it worked out in my favor.

Cons

Other than being remote this company has no pros. Remote is not even executed correctly, so there is a lot of unnecessary stress caused by this. One of the co founders has mastered some esoteric form of management where they are omnipresent - you feel like they are constantly breathing down your neck. I think this super power came at a cost though, this person is unable to interpret a kan ban board. I also got fired a week before vesting. But I’ve since decided not to join a company without a sign on bonus, so it was a somewhat valuable lesson. Ask for a sign on bonus.
