The Oregon Community Foundation’s mission to "improve lives for all Oregonians through the power of philanthropy" is disingenuous at best. If you mention OCF to anyone who is authentically involved in the work to support the marginalized groups & communities of Oregon, you will come to understand one of three things:
1) Many organizations avoid engaging OCF, considering it to be a pointless endeavor.
2) OCF will turn a blind eye to funding causes and initiatives that might upset their donor base.
3) OCF makes no real effort to reach out to many organizations with whom they claim to work in concert.
If you’re seeking to use the skills you’ve acquired professionally to directly impact the lives of those that have been underserved in this state, OCF is not the place for you. You're more likely to end up sipping wine and playing the role of sycophant to the Oregon elite at parties held under the guise of philanthropy.
To any POC thinking about working at OCF: I strongly advise that you reconsider it. Some of the stories of current and former POC employees are heartbreaking. Tokenism, discriminatory hiring practices, unfair compensation and a lack of recognition for the work of POC (and LGBTQ+) staff should be expected during your time there. White colleagues will be given unsolicited promotions, raises and performance bonuses, while your attempts to advocate for similar opportunities for yourself will either be met with resistance or fall on deaf ears.
