Pros

Store based team members (store dependent).

Cons

If you want a career in optics/optometry, this is not the place for you. Your passion for taking care of your community and helping people with optical needs will be stifled. This company does not care about the public or your eye health. They intentionally chose NOT to put anyone with optical experience in head office becasue they are not open to constructive criticism and unwilling to make positive changes to improve the medical side of optometry. Oscar Wylee is only in it for the retail side, setting unrealistic business expectations without taking into consideration that optometry is ultimately an allied health and medical arena; their goal is to make money off of the public's trust in "eye care". This is not a company to be trusted. Everyone is expendable. This company only cares about money, using questionable tactics attracting lawsuits, always at the detriment of their staff. The owners only care about one thing - how fat their wallets are. Forget being valued for going above and beyond, they will only take advantage of you. Expect to work overtime without compensation, and expect to pay things out of your own pocket to improve work efficiency (which of course, is taken for granted). This company only harbours low morale, apathy, and doing the bare minimum. There is zero humanity. Don't believe the facade they put on social media and the flowery language they use. They like to do things as cheaply as possible, using the lowest quality available, and like to teeter between illegal and immoral actions, and frequently operate against government and industry guidelines. Staff turnover, especially in head office, is extraordinarily high due to toxic work culture, extreme micromanaging, and unwillingness for improvement. Bullying and misogynistic attitudes are not uncommon practice, instilled from the very top. Another reason for high turnover is stagnant salary and no career progression. Your starting salary is what they are willing to pay, nothing more. Even if you have been in the company for over 4-5 years, going above and beyond in your role with added resposibilties over time, you will still be on your starting salary, and any application for a raise is rejected immediately. The only positive is the local store team who you work with everyday, and middle management (area and regional managers of Victoria). They are knowledgeable and professional, however their capabilities and skills are constantly being stifled by higher management in head office due to extreme micromanaging and unrealist bugets and goals set by the company director. They are the only reason why people still work in this company, without them, staff will disperse. This company has caused detrimental mental health issues for countless staff across all States, where most have left even without having another job lined up. Avoid at all cost if you want your sanity intact.

CEO is a nightmare!

Pros

None that I can come up with.

Cons

The CEO is a horrible person who has brought in a toxic culture of extreme micromanagement and bullying. On top of that, he is absolutely clueless about optics, and if not for his relationship with the owner, he would still be unemployed. The worst part is that he thinks he is genius, while he is a laughing stock for the team and the butt of all jokes. Every lunch break, everyone shares stories about how they are being bullied and mistreated by him. There's no respect whatsoever. And beware - in his spare time, he stalks all the personal social media of the employees and takes screenshots - creepy old man. So, make sure to keep all your socials private. HR also takes no action against him and just goes along with what he says. Meanwhile my mates at the competitors say that they are rejoicing with him in charge tanking the company.

Pros

The store teams, optoms, retail staff are lovely but the upper management in the head office is clueless so you can slack off if you want to

Cons

Greedy leadership only trying to make a quick buck while treating employees like resources. It was bad previously, but the micromanagement and bullying has gotten much much worse with the new CEO coming in. Him and the senior management have ZERO optics experience and have no clue what they are doing - just a bunch of old telco people trying to run a fashion forward optics and eyewear company. It's a joke! They are using ideas that were relevant 20 years ago for an internet company and have made no effort to keep up with the times or understand the industry. Toxic culture at the company with store managers getting no support from head office. JVPs are absolutely milked until they are dry. No team activities or company culture at all. The company is always cutting corners and pushing staff to take the cheaper, unethical route to achieve impossible targets - this can be seen from the $3.5 million ACCC fine they got for fraud. Google it please before considering to join here. I felt ashamed working there because we were forced to sell low quality $20 Chinese frames for $250+

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience at our company. I wanted to provide a different perspective on working at our company. Firstly, it's crucial to note that our leadership team is driven by a strong vision for the company's success. They are dedicated to steering the company towards growth opportunities for all stakeholders including our JVPs. Their focus on success allows us to invest in cutting-edge technology and continue to evolve our brand, eyewear product range to meet demand, which ultimately benefits both our patients and employees. Regarding the changes brought about by the new CEO, it's not uncommon for companies to experience adjustments during a leadership transition. While adapting to new strategies and practices can be challenging, it also presents an opportunity for personal and professional growth. Embracing change and learning from diverse perspectives can lead to innovation and improved outcomes in the long run. It’s important to recognize the diverse backgrounds and experiences that our management team brings to the table. Although they may not all have direct optics experience, their expertise from other industries can bring fresh insights and innovative approaches to our fashion-forward optics and eyewear company. At OW, you don't have to tick all the boxes to be considered for a role with us. We strive to build teams of people from diverse backgrounds. Fostering a positive work environment is a priority for our company particularly as we have been transitioning out of the pandemic and while there may be room for improvement, efforts are being made to create a supportive and inclusive atmosphere. I encourage you to consider the achievements and successes of our teams alongside any challenges we face.
