Mass layoffs via email with no severance

Pros

Any pros I can think of (occasional free bagels? a free tshirt on your birthday?) are far outweighed by the many cons

Cons

I'll start with the most obvious: During a time of international crisis (the Covid outbreak), Overtime chose to lay off 30 employees via a generic mass email, with no warning and no severance. They then had the audacity to ask us to sign a confidentiality agreement in return for one month's COBRA coverage. That's right: in the midst of a global pandemic, the management made the decision to hold our health insurance hostage in exchange for our silence. I was disinclined to acquiesce to their request. The less obvious: Despite what management may claim to the contrary, Overtime is very much a boys club with some serious ableist, sexist undercurrents. Statements were made by the CEO implying that taking sick time was a weakness, and the only thing necessary for success was *working harder*. Furthermore, I worked under a (male) manager who not only consistently made me feel inferior, but who also frequently took credit for my work. It's also interesting to note that post-layoffs, the tech & design team consists exclusively of men. The takeaway: As a woman, this was an incredibly negative, unsupportive, and damaging environment to work in; as a woman with a disability, it was even worse.

Pros

I loved working here at first. Loads of free perks (bagels on Fridays, talks from people in the industry) and a definite attempt at company culture (the chance for 1-on-1 meetings with the CEO, for example).

Cons

I soon realized that the good stuff came with a lot of bad. The place is chaotic, managers have been given too much power and don't know how to manage. I saw more than one person bullied and held back by managers for the tiniest of mistakes (things that should have been worked through with training, not attacked). All senior creatives there are white men and this creates a horrible environment for women on the creative side and has resulted in a string of women leaving over time.
