Pros

Flexibility to work remotely and support small companies across CA There is an incredible amount of professional freedom here. If you are a self-starter, you can essentially pitch, design, and run your own projects to support small businesses.

Cons

Senior leadership currently lacks a cohesive, long-term strategic plan. Instead of focusing, they frequently launch a high volume of new initiatives without the proper roadmap to support them in the long run. This can make the organizational direction feel erratic and reactive, and for example they recently "acquired" an AI company. There has been significant tension at the very top. Last year, two C-suite executives resigned specifically due to fundamental disagreements with the CEO. One was near retirement and chose to leave rather than finish out their career under the current regime, which speaks volumes about the internal friction.

Pros

Flexibility to work remote. Friendly, smart employees.

Cons

Too many priority projects, too many meetings, too little concern about employees repeatedly leaving due to poor treatment by leadership. It’s a tough job market, so anyone would be tempted to dismiss all the recent reviews. You’re probably an empathetic, mission-driven person to apply for a PCV role — none of what you read on here will apply to your experience, right? Well, so was everyone else who came before you. If you want to dismiss the stories, talk to former employees. See if you can find one who had a good experience with this leadership team.

Pros

- Work-life balance can be reasonable during stable periods. - Opportunities to take on diverse responsibilities and develop new skills. - Colleagues are kind, collaborative, and genuinely dedicated to the organization’s mission. - Exposure to the CDFI and impact investing sectors, with opportunities to learn from and connect with experienced leaders in the field as well as awesome small business owners.

Cons

- Staff capacity and resources are often stretched too thin, leading to periods of high workload, micromanagement, and tight deadlines to meet funder requirements. - The HR function was restructured, with internal leadership replaced by an external contractor. This transition has presented challenges in employee support, onboarding, and administrative consistency (e.g., payroll and benefits processing). - Management practices emphasize close oversight of employees, (e.g., a camera-on policy during all virtual meetings, and attendance at after-hours events when senior leadership is visiting the office). - Decision-making by senior leadership is highly centralized, with limited opportunities for staff input or transparent communication. - Organizational changes, including multiple rounds of layoffs over the past two years, have affected morale and overall trust in leadership.
