Pros

Ample pay for lack of a NYS license, easy to learn how to do things since it’s all robots. Good healthcare

Cons

Terrible and unqualified management at all tiers, including the higher ups. No communication whatsoever—protocol changes will be made/implemented and no mass notifications will be sent; if you’re not there at the time they change something, you’re left in the dark. Extreme favoritism. Training isn’t openly available to all in all areas (hence favoritism). Extreme unprofessionalism. We’re treated like a factory line focused on pumping out sample results, regardless of the number of techs or instrument failures. Too many impromptu business-steered decisions made with little thought of how it actually affects things leading to more impromptu decisions made, snowballing into issues that would’ve been prevented if they were planned out and analyzed beforehand. No sustainability or future post COVID testing. Too many layoffs that makes no sense and seem to be money driven and not thought of in a sense of realistically how many people are needed for certain sample loads. EXTREME burn out culture. ***Payroll has made multiple mistakes with their numbers on many occasions requesting people pay back their mistakes. Nobody listens to the techs on sensible issues and decisions, it seems that only the worst ideas are considered, if even that. They make you feel indebted to them for providing you with onsite food/lunch which is no longer being provided because they want to make “more sustainable decisions.” Because everything is so automated, it’s mind numbing. They don’t care about their employees. They’ll say they do and then fire and replace you. Current Opentrons employees have worked in the lab during surges and have said how horrible it is.

Pros

The few perks we had are now gone. These include catered meals, paid lunch, discounted Uber rides, grubhub credit. The lab had so much potential and people actually enjoyed working here. But now? We are all helping each other leave this toxic waste dump. The one pro is the salary and that’s only if they felt like giving you an adequate raise this past year and if they didn’t charge you back thousands of dollars you earned during the late 2021 surge.

Cons

Where to start… incompetent management! Unsafe laboratory practices! Extreme burnout across all shifts! Shady work practices. Our dear director screams at you regardless of what you do or say regardless of who you are. We test thousands of samples a day and we used to deactivate the samples because we don’t open these thousands of samples under a proper biosafety cabinet. We open them on the bench, and to save costs, they decided it is alright to no longer deactivate these samples. And right after that was decided, imagine how many people called out with confirmed covid cases. The samples we handle are being tested for COVID but we could be exposed to countless other viruses and bacterial pathogens. This lab is not set up for learning, for mentoring or for appreciating what you do for a living. This lab is set up like a factory and you’re forced to test as many samples as you can every shift, god forbid you need to use the restroom. The higher ups also have a tendency of looking down on you while you work as if they could do it any smarter/faster. No aspect of this lab offers you the satisfaction of having a degree and a license to do the work. Literally monkeys can do all the work we do in this lab. And even then we get berated for everything. As I mentioned, the pay is decent and that’s only when they actually pay you. I lost count of how many times payroll paid me wrong consistently. During the surge, people were promised intense volumes of money since we were slaving away working 12hrs a day non stop for weeks. And after we received our paychecks, we were forced to pay thousands of dollars back to the company because they supposedly screwed up the math. Currently, the turnover rate is scary high and yet no one managing this lab seems to care. The remaining employees are expected to continue slaving away regardless. In essence, trust all these reviews because they are scarily accurate.
