Great Team, Horrible Job

Pros

My teammates at Peach were wonderful, relentlessly optimistic, and innovative people. The best thing about Peach, however, is that it taught me what I am really looking for in my work and life.

Cons

Peach was one of the most toxic jobs I have ever held, at the core of which is the CEO, who is volatile emotionally and has an inflated sense of self. I have a clear memory of thinking something was wrong when he screamed my team in a meeting for not being aware of what the latest app (that had nothing to do with our business) was. There are many examples of this behavior: - Once told me he never makes mistakes. - Send a rude email to an EA of our investor because she shared a name with my co-worker. - Often yelled at co-founders and dressed them down. - Dressed down other team members at all-hands meetings on a weekly basis. - Would call team over to him by shouting “Gather ‘round boys” and would add in girls only when it was brought up. And I could go on. The toxic behavior trickled down from there as management could be very unprofessional as well. Once in a meeting, I was about to ask for time off and my boss responded with “please don’t be pregnant.” There was also a problem of management hiring talented new people with nebulous job outlines and titles. These jobs would have high expectations and very little direction. Often they were let go when these expectations were not met. Lastly, communication between managers and subordinate was quite poor. Often critical information would be left out such as shift schedules and contract lengths. Perhaps most troubling is the lack of diverse women within the company, especially after viewing their 2017 International Women’s Day photo, which lacked all my former coworkers who were women of color. So, if you're a woman of color, beware. Peach seems to fire women and particularly women of color at a higher rate than the men (surprising since women only make up ~30% of the company). This lack of female coworkers had been pointed out many times and seemingly no attempt at further diversifying was considered or encouraged. Peach is also inconsistent with severance as well. I have heard from multiple women receiving and not receiving severance at random, with no regard for how long they had been with the company and what they contributed.

Pros

The environment is very relaxed, a couple employees are very passionate about the work, being on-call isn't too heavy (you'll never get called that late) and it's exciting to have a very fast turn around time on your work (projects often go live very quickly.)

Cons

There are a lot of problems with Peach as a place to work. All of these problems I bring up overlap to create a company that, on its worst days, can be quite toxic. In regards to the culture itself, it has a very frat/bro style culture (the place is often a mess/it's very male dominated/etc) which, and the positive can lead to a fun/relaxed environment, can lead to a lot of entitled/exclusive behavior from some staff members. This isn't helped by the fact that many employees are proud of the fact that there's no true HR representative, which they believe gives them license to make some very inappropriate comments. Another issue I have is that the management seems to have little interest in long term growth/retention for their people. This problem rears its heads in some pretty ugly ways. For instance, a number of people feel under appreciated and many leave after only a few months. While working there, I think someone quit every other week, which is quite impressive given that the company has less than 40 employees. Another way that this problem manifests is that there seems to be no long term interest in employees: for instance, there are rarely training sessions for employees to develop their skills and there's absolutely no room for growth. I'm entry level and report directly to one of the founders, so it's not like I can ever get a promotion here. Finally, I find myself pretty unhappy with the management itself. They often reinforce the very toxic culture, either through perpetuating certain behaviors or staying silent while employees are poorly treated. While I understand they are very busy, I find them to be poor leaders who are inconsistent in their values, often break promises or change their mind without informing anyone or just generally promote negative business practices. Once I even witnessed the CEO of the company shame employees for looking at their phone while waiting for technical problems to be fixed.

Pros

Most of the people here are great. Lunch perks daily. A very flexible vacation policy. Cool office. Peach Madness. Cool product.

Cons

Extremely Unstable. No one knows what’s going on day by day. You never know if today is your last day. Extremely high turnover. The talented people are leaving because there’s no stability. Mass layoffs at random. I heard recently one of the remote sales reps was randomly laid off after being top in sales for the month. Processes and strategies change everyday sometimes in the same day. Very cliche startup culture. Very unprofessional from the top to bottom. The really really good managers & directors were all laid off at once and they were replaced with very mediocre ones. Big aspirations with no direction.
