Pros

Fun work environment; generous discount on some merchandise; flexible scheduling; great training in nutrition; get to see dogs all day

Cons

Upper management is too removed from the business to understand how to run it and therefore the rules put in place often hinder sales instead of boost them. Compensation for managers and associates is well below what it should be. Associates are expected to sell as if they work on commission but get minimum wage pay. Turnover is outrageously high. Bonus structure for managers is ridiculous. Managers only make base pay because the goals are unobtainable. Absolutely no work-life balance (despite what they tell you in the interview). Your days off are simply days that you work from home because you need to solve problems in your store any time of day or night. The merchandising is horrendous and the stores look cluttered because there is far too much product that doesn’t sell. Very little support from district managers as a whole. They’ll ask you to fix a problem with no guidance or help so you’re forced to find your own creative solutions but then you’ll get reprimanded for stepping outside of “company standards”. You can get reprimanded for taking a single breath out of line but never get rewarded for anything, ever.

Pros

Great discounts, working with animals will never put a frown on your face, and store level management has all been pretty great

Cons

PetValu is currently growing at a crazy fast pace. Their corporate side has not kept up with the needs of the stores. Anything that can possibly be delegated down to the store level is. There is claims of PetValu being a “family” and while at the store level that may be true, I firmly believe upper management only cares about numbers. They are the cheapest company I have ever worked for, running stores in impossibly low numbers of hours and instead of helping struggling stores, they punish them by taking away hours, making them fall further and further behind.

Pros

Decent employee discounts, ability to see your direct impact on the community.

Cons

Poor benefits, low pay, little to no support from District Manager and up, constant changes to store layout inconsistent with the allotted payroll matrix. These are just the overall problems pre Covid-19 with this company but the spread of the virus has really shown where a lot of the problems in this company are. Initially the company was very slow to react, citing the virus was probably overstated since this was an election year. Thus no active measures were taken to create a safer atmosphere for their frontline employees. Every action since has been about a week behind other companies in the same industry. The response has been botched from the top down, with store managers and assistant managers taking the largest hit. In the best of times this company looks for every place it can to cut costs but with the pandemic Pet Retail Brands has dramatically slashed payrolls but given store associates a one time $50 bonus instead of a temporary hazard pay raise like comparable companies within the industry. You can almost hear people updating their resumes in every successive conference call and if you bring any concerns about your safety or compensation up you're basically told to be grateful you still have a job. Managers have no real protection if they get sick as the company will have you burn your sick and vacation time and if you go over that, too bad. I have never worked for a company that so blatantly disregards their employees concerns and wellbeing as this one in over 35 years of retail. The moment things return to normal is the moment Pet Valu loses 40-50% of its work force.
