Unethical Business Practices

Pros

The Training is thorough, the products are good quality, the hours aren’t bad for retail. You get to know the customers closely and you get to see a lot of pets. They give a lot to the community and rescues.

Cons

No matter what they try to say, it’s high pressure sales. You have to hit sales goals or risk write ups. They set it up as a very ethical company with high values, but it’s all just for show, not something they practice. They use write ups to get rid of associates not making sales goals rather than trying to improve performance. They have a 12 week training program but don’t give hours for it, just telling the managers to work extra to get the training done. You must drop everything to hold the customers hands, stay with them as they shop, add on by suggesting at least 3 items, and get each customer to spend at least $50. But don’t fall behind on the task either. Lifting heavy dog food and litter all day and stacking and restackkng it until it’s perfect. No matter what your title they will over work you. You want 12 hours, they will work you 25, full time you will work 6 and 7 day work weeks, sometimes open to close, and alone in the store. They can’t keep sales associates at any store, because they pay much less then other companies and you have to help out stores that are short staffed. They are very behind on technology. Ordering is pen and paper and takes hours several times a week. You have to receive everything on paper too. The vendors don’t send product for weeks and months and customers get upset and often don’t come back. The benefits aren’t great, none for part time, and if you quit they won’t pay out any PTO. They also won’t let you take PTO because the city is always understaffed. If anyone calls off there is no one to call in and the managers or full timers just have to come in or work open to close to cover it. You go in at 8:30 and you won’t get home til 6:30 or 7, so you won’t see your family. All this and the only ones who say thank you or a kind word are the owners.

Worst job ever

Pros

Helping people better their pets lives

Cons

Under paid. Over worked. Not valued. Pressure sales. Unrealistic goals and expectations. As a manager, you are set up to fail. Upper management (Regional Manager, Director of Store Operations, etc) are NOT supportive and honestly pretty clueless on how to run a store.

Pros

It's fun to meet people's pets and you get a very good education pertaining to pets' health and management. If you are interested in pursuing a career with animals, this is a good place to start or to have on your resume while you pursue more serious options.

Cons

The pay is very low, especially considering how much associates are expected to know and do for their customers. There is very little chance of a promotion or a raise beyond 25 cents an hour. The most you will make here without a salary is about $15/hr. That's only if you become an assistant manager and there are very few openings. The stores are open 7 days a week, mostly 12 hours a day. You will have to give up your 9-5 schedule and be willing to work nights and weekends. Most full-time employees work 30-35 hours a week. Overtime is not an option.
