I was genuinely traumatized by my experience working for this company. I worked there many many years ago when the employee handbook banned “unprofessional” hairstyles such as afros, braids, and dreadlocks. As a Black woman I had to go to great lengths to make sure my natural hair didn’t get me fired. But in the end I was fired via email for chewing gum. I wish I was making this up. Management was not polite, approachable, or warm. The owner always looked at me and spoke to me with sharp condescension. The older, wiser version of me would have walked when I read the employee handbook, but the college-aged version of me didn’t know what a toxic work environment was yet. We all live and learn, I guess. I hope they have since improved. Now, as a business owner with my own staff, I take experiences like this and tuck them in my mental “What Not to Do” folder.

The employee handbook stated that unprofessional hairstyles such as Mohawks, Afros, braids, or dreadlocks would not be tolerated. So I guess I needed straight extensions so I wouldn't look so, you know, Black.
